Supporting Sustainable Economies for Sustainable Communities

Yesterday I had the honor of moderating a panel of funders and project experts at the Vermont Community Development Associations Winter Conference. I had asked all the panelists to share one inspiring project and three out of five of the projects shared were partially funded by Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) (I swear I didn't pay them to say that!) We're so proud of the projects we see come through our doors. - When the Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance (TRA) applied for funding through NBRC’s Catalyst Program in 2023, the town in New York’s Essex County only had 16 childcare slots available. There were over 300 children under the age of 6 in need. The TRA proposed a project that would transform the former St. Mary’s Catholic School, a vacant 1,000 sq ft building, into a public childcare and learning center, walkable to Ticonderoga’s downtown and parks. Through the Catalyst Program’s 2023 funding round, the NBRC awarded $248,570 to the project. By August 2024 renovations to the building were completed, Silver Bay YMCA was selected to run the center, 13 full-time and 2 part-time positions were created, and the Ticonderoga Community Early Learning Center’s cheerful rooms were ready to welcome their newly enrolled children! ------- With a new funding round for NBRC programs coming up, you may be wondering what kinds of projects have been successful in the past. - Hey, we recognize those mountains! The NBRC is proud to have supported two of the featured non-profit ski/snowboard areas in this moving documentary by Teton Gravity Research: New Hampshire's Whaleback Mountain and Black Mountain of Maine. In 2023 both mountains received NBRC grants to help increase their snowmaking abilities. We hope to see them (and others like them) continue to bring recreational, social and educational opportunities to their members and visitors for generations to come. Give the doc a watch for a glimpse at the joy and impact they have on their local communities!
We're stoked to announce that Mountains Not For Profit is now live and streaming digitally on our YouTube Channel! Across North America, communities are reclaiming their mountains and redefining what skiing and snowboarding are all about. Mountains Not for Profit—our follow-up to In Pursuit of Soul—, is a short documentary from yours truly in partnership with the Indy Pass, that takes you inside four non-profit ski areas that are challenging the corporate-driven snow culture: Shames Mountain (BC), Whaleback (NH), Black Mountain of Maine, and Antelope Butte (WY). These mountains prove that passion, grit, and a true love for the sport are all you need to keep the snow culture alive. Powered by volunteer efforts, donations, and pure joy on the slopes, this is grassroots skiing at its best—where people and purpose fuel every powder day. Not driven by profit, but by the spirit of community, these mountains are where the heart and soul of skiing and snowboarding thrive, far from the distractions of mega-resorts. Mountains Not for Profit captures the essence of these vital ski areas and the people who keep them going, brought to life with TGR’s signature storytelling and cinematic expertise, alongside the Indy Pass.#TGRMountainsNotForProfit- This project is made possible with support from Indy Pass and BlackStrap®.

- Last week we had the honor of attending a ribbon cutting in celebration of the Mount Washington Observatory's expanded network of weather monitoring stations (the Mount Washington Regional Mesonet). The project received 2023 NBRC Catalyst Program funds, helping to modernize existing weather stations and add to the growing number of stations in the network. This will help the Observatory's meteorologists provide accurate, real-time forecasts that can help forecasters, scientists, search and rescue teams, conservation organizations, and the public when making outdoor recreation plans. Understanding our ever-evolving weather system is no easy task on a mountain that gets "the world's worst weather," and we commend the Mount Washington Observatory team for their work! - NBRC is a fully remote organization, but we do love a reason to work together in person (and even more so when it coincides with a visit to some of our grantees!) A number of our Southern Vermont team members and our Federal Co-Chair had the opportunity to co-work in Brattleboro's BiziTown Workspace last week, a recipient of 2021 Catalyst funding (formerly SEID). We experienced the benefits of having a flexible co-working environment available to individuals and organizations just like ours, equipped with open work spaces, desks, private offices, a conference room, lounge, and (most importantly) high speed internet. We enjoyed hearing how the space has been utilized by freelancers, remote workers, business owners, and organizations seeking appropriate space for meetings. Learn more about the space and membership levels (drop-in day passes are available): https://www.bizitown.com/While in town, we were also treated to a tour of the North Barn at Brattleboro's Retreat Farm. Selected as a NBRC-USDA project in 2021, Retreat Farm sought to turn the North Barn into a year-round event venue, providing a one-of-a-kind indoor community space. Taking a 190-year-old barn and transforming it into a modern gathering space was no light undertaking, and we were aptly impressed to see what Retreat Farm accomplished with this project. The community now has a large indoor space that can lend itself to seemingly endless possibilities, from proms and concerts to lectures, weddings, conferences, community events, and a place to simply enjoy quality time together. Learn more about the Retreat Farm's mission: https://lnkd.in/engKs2cdThank you to BiziTown and Retreat Farm for your hospitality and for showing us how valuable these projects have been in your community!
