About us
The dedicated professionals of New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) are passionate about the outdoors and protecting the environment. Agency staff protect our air and water, fish and wildlife, and more than 5 million treasured acres of public land for outdoor recreation. Educating the public, especially youth, about caring for the environment and natural resources is another critical part of DEC’s mission. Whether it’s setting game seasons, enforcing clean air laws, fighting wildland fires, or issuing environmental permits to factories, if it has to do with protecting the environment, DEC is there. DEC's headquarters is in Albany, the state capitol. Staff in nine regional offices serve communities throughout the state. Join the National Deer Association (NDA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) on Tuesday, October 29, for “Choosing Non-Lead Ammo to Protect Wildlife,” an online webinar that explores the benefits of non-lead ammunition on New York’s wildlife populations as well as a new NYSDEC financial incentive program for New York deer hunters willing to give it a try. There has been a lot of discussion on the issue of lead in hunting ammunition over the past few years. What is the truth when it comes to non-lead? Is copper a realistic alternative? Approximately $1.25 million is available to assist local emergency relief organizations in providing additional food to those in need in New York State. Various types of equipment (trucks, refrigerated vehicles, refrigerators, freezers, generators, etc.) are eligible through this grant program. - 📢 The DEC’s Finger Lakes Watershed Hub is hiring! We are looking for a candidate who will protect and improve water quality in the Finger Lakes. The position will assist to develop, administer, and advance the Finger Lakes Action Agenda, manage grant programs, collect data and research emerging issues, and develop plans to support water quality, climate, and flooding resiliency initiatives. - Join us for a ReLeaf Workshop on October 3, 2024 to hear tree-climbing champion Mark Chisholm talk all things climbing! 📅 October 3 2024, 8:30am-2:30pm, at Cazenovia Park in Buffalo, NY Mark has won the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) New Jersey Chapter Tree Climbing Championship 21 of the last 22 years and won the ISA International Tree Climbing Championship in 1997, 2001, and 2010. In this workshop, he’ll cover the physics of tree climbing, ropework, chainsaw maintenance, and more while demonstrating techniques. The cost is 35forthegeneralpublicand35 for the general public and 35forthegeneralpublicand30 for ReLeaf and NYS Urban Forestry Council members. - Ocean health is critical to New York’s local ecology, economy, and culture, but how do we measure ocean health? Is it the cleanliness of the water? The abundance of marine life? Or maybe it’s how sustainably we can use its resources. These factors and more are used to evaluate ocean health! The New York Bight Ocean Indicators System was initiated by DEC’s Division of Marine Resources and Stony Brook University in 2017 to monitor trends in physical and chemical, biological, and human population indicators of the ocean. Join DEC and Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences staff for an Ocean Health Overview at the New York Aquarium. - Do you have what it takes to be a DEC Forest Ranger? The mission of the Division of Forest Protection is to provide public safety and state land protection through expertise in wildland search, rescue, fire, law enforcement, and incident management throughout the State of New York. The Division protects five million acres of state-owned, department-managed lands and easements, as well as the people who use these lands. Forest Rangers are sworn Police Officers authorized to enforce all state laws, with special emphasis on Environmental Conservation Law, the protection of state lands, and the public using state lands. Every Forest Ranger must successfully complete a rigorous 26-week Basic Training School before being assigned to a geographic area. The first step toward becoming a Forest Ranger is successfully passing the Civil Service exam.
