- I raise a glass of cider to NY’s apple producers on #NationalAppleCiderDay! We are fortunate to have nearly 1,700 apple farms in NY producing the freshest local fruit and cider for us all to enjoy. #BuyLocal
- My new report on agriculture identified opportunities for growth in the Hudson Valley, one of only two regions to see an increase in the number of farms. My rural roundtable discussion with community members today in Middletown looked at more ways NY can help boost our family farms and local food supply, along with addressing a number of major issues in the region including housing, health care and economic development.

- Best wishes and thank you to Associate Director of Human Resources Joanne Pirfo as she prepares to retire this month after 37 years of state service, including the last 34 years at the State Comptroller’s Office. She began her career at OSC with the Office of Unclaimed Funds. Eager to grow, she saw an opportunity to move to HR as a keyboard specialist 2 and her time here flourished. She entered a traineeship program, took exams that came her way, and was continually promoted in the HR department. “I just loved everything about staffing. I enjoy learning, while also being able to help people. It’s like I found my niche,” said Joanne. And help people she did. Her kindness and openness to finding the answers even when she didn’t have them herself, made her a ‘go to person’ for staffing and career needs. “I’m glad that they feel I am approachable enough. It’s a nice feeling knowing people are comfortable to reach out to you and ask for assistance,” she said. Since 2015, she has managed a staffing unit of eight who are responsible for working with the divisions and their hiring needs. The staffing unit also ensures appointments, promotions, and new hires are submitted and processed in the Civil Service system. And her team works with the payroll unit in HR to confirm all staffing transactions, so employees are paid in a timely manner. “Everyone wants to get paid on time and that’s what we are making sure of every two weeks,” she said. “I work with a great team in DHR. They are just wonderful.” Joanne never thought her career at OSC would take her as far as it did. She encourages other people who are just starting out here to be open to new opportunities and to take exams to move up in grades, even if you may not be interested in a new position right now. “If you passed a test and your name is on the list, it can make all the difference. Open yourself up, just for the experience alone it is great,” she added. Once she retires at the end of November, Joanne is looking forward to her new daily routine. She plans to bake for the holidays and enjoy the company of family and friends. Travel and volunteering are also in her future, but don’t be surprised if you catch her in the halls early next year. She has been invited back to assist the HR Innovations Team with the HR Evolution Project. Even in retirement, she is willing to lend a hand. “It is an honor to be called a public servant and know I am helping people. At the end of the day, if you helped one person achieve a career goal, it gives you a great deal of satisfaction and happiness,” she said.
- Election day is here! I encourage all voters to make their voices heard at the ballot box. It is a fundamental right we should exercise as Americans. Polls are open until 9 p.m. across the state. 🗳️ Go vote!
