We are honored to receive a commendation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for the mutual aid support our crews provided to the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC - The Reliable One) in October. Sixteen OPPD employees spent three days in Orlando, helping restore power to about 83,400 OUC customers affected by Hurricane Milton. This effort capped off a 2½-week deployment that began with restoring service in rural West Virginia following Hurricane Helene. Mutual aid is at the heart of public power, and we are proud to stand ready to help communities near and far when they need it most. We thank our team for their dedication and service! 🙌
In 2024, more than 300 OPPD employees showed their passion to serve, dedicating 1,300+ hours to volunteer efforts that embodied our core values of honor for our community and a deep sense of care for each other. From assisting with storm cleanup after devastating spring tornadoes to participating in Habitat for Humanity of Omaha Rock the Block events, volunteering during the season of giving and so much more, our team members worked hard to make a difference. Meet Michal, Senior Renewable Energy Specialist at OPPD 👋🎺 Before joining OPPD, Michal's passion for music led him to the world-class Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, where he spent years performing in front of massive crowds across the U.S. and Europe. Those experiences taught him the power of collaboration, dedication and precision—skills he now brings to his role at OPPD. While pursuing his degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michal played with the Cornhusker Marching Band—which provided a creative outlet amidst his engineering and science classes. He recalls that nothing beat the incredible noise and energy of football Saturdays at Memorial Stadium. At OPPD, Michal plays a pivotal role in securing 1.5 gigawatts of renewable generation for our customers. His work involves exploring cutting-edge technologies like battery storage, advanced wind turbine designs and solar arrays to monitoring emerging innovations like nuclear and long-duration energy storage. Outside of work, Michal continues to share his love for music as a coach for the Millard West Wildcat Band.
