📸: Neutron imaging, also known as “neutron radiography” or “neutron tomography,” is a powerful, nondestructive imaging method that reveals the internal structure of a sample by subjecting it to a neutron beam. Unlike other nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, neutron imaging can easily penetrate dense materials, helping manufacturers design better, more efficient, and safer products. The difference that neutron imaging makes is demonstrated in this photo. Consider the LEGO figure hidden in a jar of staples. Compared to an X-ray with a high attenuation rate for dense materials like metal (left), neutron imaging can see the lighter-density plastic through the metal. Applications for neutron imaging include rapid prototyping, failure analysis, weld analysis, concrete inspection, explosive/ energetic devices inspection, radiation hardening testing, and nuclear fuel inspection.
