Fixture Friday Photo – Mother Nature can bear down on the greenhouse industry in tremendous ways demanding an immediate response in relation to controls. So, what happens when a greenhouse is operated by multiple, outdated, and isolated systems that don’t communicate with each other? These inefficiencies have a dire effect on greenhouses seeking to produce ahead of growing seasons and holidays. Pieper Automation, in partnership with Pieper Electric, Inc., recently worked with a greenhouse operator, Karthauser & Sons in Germantown, to update, and automate their greenhouse operations. Pieper Automation provided an intuitive heating, cooling, and ventilation solution that consolidated systems, making the process much easier to manage for the operator. Wire Wednesday 2.0 – This past December, a team of three Pieper Electric employees competed in the IDEAL Electrician National Championship in West Palm Beach, FL (part of the ServiceTitan Elite Trades Championship Series). This championship seeks to identify the “Best of the Best” professional and apprentice electricians in the country. The three-round competition included a Phase One five-minute online digital challenge, followed by a Phase Two at Home Challenge to showcase skills and workmanship, and ended with the Top Five master electricians and Top 10 apprentices competing on-site for the chance to be crowned the National Champion. This year Tom Kennedy, a master electrician from Pieper Electric, was crowned the National Champion for the second time (initial win was in 2022), and Kyle Bath, also a Pieper Electric employee, secured second place as student apprentice winner. Wire Wednesday – Solar continues to amp up! According to pv magazine USA, in 2024, solar once again exceeded all other forms of new energy generation and continued to evolve as a viable, long-lasting technology. A few notable accomplishments from last year include: - US-based module manufacturing increased by over 9 GW in Q3—a direct result of five new or expanded factories in Alabama, Florida, Ohio, and Texas. At 40 GW, domestic manufacturing has nearly quintupled since the adoption of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. - Module prices declined rapidly (a direct result of global oversupply); and - Increasingly severe weather events led to ever-evolving products (hail-resistant solar modules).
