- Yesterday, we honored the Jackie Robinson of Footwear Design, Wilson SmithIII, with the opening of his very own Footwear Design Stu/deo. What better way to honor him than with the studio opening on the first day of the Future Sole Program, where the next generation of designers across HBCUs will unleash their abilities within that very room. This is what you call an intergenerational transfer. Thank you, WSIII, for BEING YOU no matter what room you're in. Special shout out to PLC Detroit Alum and designer of the space, Angel Buckens, and to the dope muralist, Anthony Reed, for capturing the essence of Wilson in art form. Photo Cred: John Howard

Today it was an honor to witness the dedication of the Willson Smith III Footwear Design Studio at HBCU, Pensole Lewis in Detroit Michigan. Hundreds of people from PLC Detroit and Nike along with students from the Future Sole program and Wilson's family gathered (in-person and virtually) to commemorate the space honoring the industry's first Black footwear designer. Wilson Smith, your contributions have paved the way as many 'firsts' and this studio is a physical manifestation of your lifetime commitment to empowering next gen creatives and athletes. For the last 3 years I have had the privilege of working side by side with you and have gleaned a few important nuggets— Empathy is our greatest human potential. Small consistent acts [of kindness, mentorship, gratitude, optimism, care] built over a lifetime can make a huge impact. Put people first. The work second. Greatness will follow. Thank you for being you. Your gratitude and joy is infectious. Congratulations Wilson Smith, Athony Reed, Angel Buckens, Dr. D'Wayne Edwards and the entire team at Pensole Lewis . The future that's being created is nothing less than extraordinary. Thank you to Nike teammates who contributed to today's celebration—Kizmet Mills, Brett Brown, Andrew Croll, Dejene Taye, ronnie Wright, Angela Snow, Gregory Rouf, Crysta Glen, Ria Daniels, Alisa Wilbon, Larry Gibbs, Keyana Thompson-Shaw, Sarah Hallal, Risa Beck, Edmond Holmes, Javier Lopez, Tiffany V., Matt Williams, John Hall, Wade Lamar Ray, Felicia Turrentine Wasson, Karol Collymore (she/her), Jason Mayden, Tobie Hatfield, Tinker Hatfield, Howard H.
