- Today marks the beginning of National Family Caregiver Month as recognized by President Biden's Proclamation. Mrs. Carter often said, “there are only four kinds of people in the world–those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” Our nation's 105 million family caregivers provide billions in value of unpaid care and deserve the support and resources they need. They deserve to be seen and recognized for the incredible contribution they provide to their family, friends, or neighbors. RCI and 166 other organizations have called upon President Biden to establish an Office of Caregiver Health at the Department of Health and Human Services in the Office of the Secretary. No better time than this very meaningful month. Thank you, President Biden, for designating National Family Caregiver Month and for encouraging "all Americans to reach out to those who provide care for our Nation’s family members, friends, and neighbors in need to recognize, honor, and thank them." Thank you also to the many bipartisan elected officials and 166 organizations who have supported the establishment of an Office of Caregiver Health.https://lnkd.in/geYMn3ZS

Happy Halloween! Something that can feel scary is depression, anxiety, and mental health struggles. It is something that caregivers can face - and here’s the treat for you from Professionals Who Care! 👉🏽 caregivers who can stay in the workforce can have improved mental health outcomes despite the stress of two major responsibilities. Why? 👉🏽 …avoiding solation by being around others, 👉🏽 …having social interaction not solely about caring, 👉🏽 …averting loss of identity to caregiving. This is why we at PWC advocate for an inclusive workplace for caregivers, for caregivers to have a choice to stay employed! We invite you to read a NPR article out today on the depression, anxiety, isolation, and mental health struggles of caregivers - and the importance of a community support. ✅ “… because family caregiving is not a public conversation, many of them — of us — feel invisible. Nearly half say they are lonely, more than twice the U.S. rate of 22%.” ✅ “Isolation makes the other sorrows of caregiving — stress, guilt, resentment, anxiety, money worries — harder to bear. It alters the brain, transforming difficulty into despair.” ✅ “Almost 60% of the roughly 11.5 million people caring for someone with dementia report high or very high emotional stress. Between 40% and 70% of family caregivers have symptoms of depression. Caregivers of people with incurable cancer actually report more anxiety than the patients themselves.” ✅ “The majority of caregivers — 72 % — who say they’re lonely also say they’re highly stressed out. Caregivers who have support and connections are much less likely to be highly stressed, at just 24%.” (Dawn E. Shedrick, LCSW’s) “social-work training also helped her see that her situation was not her fault or her failure. It is a system-wide failure. Actually, when it comes to caring for adults, there isn’t really a system to fail. There are just caregivers, trying to make it all work.” Thank you Dawn, Kat McGowan, Caregiver Action Network, and Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers for this story! So trick or treat, we all get to choose what type of workplace there is for caregivers.

I was honored to present at the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers Convening in Detroit, Michigan last week, prior to the Grantmakers In Aging (GIA) Conference. I shared insights about Working While Caring at New York University Work Life, and heard from many others about their inspiring caregiving work in Emergency Preparedness, Changing the Caridigm (Care Paradigm), the Caregiving: Generations film, and Data to Inform Action. Sending a warm thank you to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers team and co-presenters: Paurvi Bhatt, Josh Carter, Karen Kavanaugh, Toni Miles, Jennifer Olsen, Lezlie Poole, Ke (Kelly) Wang, Ph.D.,Tom Chiodo, Belinda Croft, Elizabeth Field, Ursulá Garcia-Mayes (EdD Candidate), Moranda Guy, LaCinda J., Maxine Kellman, DVM, PhD, PMP, Rajeev Ramchand, Raul Soto, GPHR, SHRM-SCP, and to Pivotal Ventures and sponsors. It was great to see NYU Silver School of Social Work alumna Lindsay Goldman, CEO of Grantmakers In Aging (GIA), fantastic to meet Tia Newcomer from CaringBridge, Rani Snyder from The John A. Hartford Foundation and always wonderful to see Robyn Golden of Rush University Medical Center!
