- At Rivian, we believe every aspect of our vehicles has the potential to drive #innovation, no matter how unassuming. Out of this belief came Design Engineer Alex Anderson and her team’s mechanical design work (patent pending) on the R1 Gen 2 door cladding—a project that recently earned them the Society of Plastics Engineers’ Automotive Innovation Award for Sustainability. “With our old design, there were various tiny fasteners connecting the internal and external faces of the cladding,” Alex explains. “That was per door. So every single door had a unique plastic part on it and a new injection molding tool. Multiply that by four doors, that meant we had 12 molds per vehicle on the R1S and R1T for all these plastics. Also, you have to think about boxes line-side that you have to manage and parts you have to inventory.” Her team’s solution? A "living hinge" — a single, thin section of plastic that connects the inner and outer shells of the cladding, reducing complexity and cutting down on parts, molds, and line-side inventory. The result? They went from managing 12 parts to just 4 per vehicle model. “Where Rivian, I think, went above and beyond towards #sustainability is we implemented a 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin,” Alex adds. “That means 30% of the plastic’s mass comes from recycled materials like detergent bottles and curbside recycling bins. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t something we could just switch over. We had to do a lot of testing and validation to make it happen.” By consolidating parts and materials, the team achieved a significant cost savings per vehicle and reduced install time. But it’s the sustainability impact that’s game-changing. This redesign saves nearly half a million kilograms of CO₂E annually — the equivalent of taking 105 internal combustion engine vehicles off the road each year. This was made possible by using fewer fasteners, fewer trucks to transport parts, and recycled materials in the cladding itself. “We faced a lot of external roadblocks. The choice to innovate was inherently risky; no one else had done something like this. We had to work really hard to collect the data to prove it was possible,” says Alex. “The biggest takeaway from this project was that even though we were told it was impossible, we didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. We kept trying and made it happen.” Their persistence was rewarded on stage in front of 700 industry experts from Ford, GM, and Chrysler, where they accepted the award with their partners from Rivian’s tooling team, supply chain and supplier partners who helped bring the design to life. Their work is far from over and innovation never ceases. If you’re ready to be part of projects that redefine what’s possible, Alex’s team is #hiring. - With another year in the rearview mirror, we take a look back at 2024 through the eyes of our people and our community. This year, the world met Rivian’s newest vehicles, #R2 and #R3, and we updated our flagship #R1T and #R1S with groundbreaking #technology and design. Throughout the year, we introduced dozens of new software features and improvements; hosted thousands of demo drives; formed new partnerships that continually improve the owner experience; doubled down on our #sustainability mission; began a new joint venture with Volkswagen Group; and, in each of these moments, discovered new ways to connect with our friends and loved ones. Through it all, we heard, watched and shared in your stories—powerful reminders that we’re all on this climb together. Let’s hit replay on 2024. From groundbreaking launches to heartfelt connections, thank you for sharing this adventure with us. Here’s to 2025. Here’s to you.#rivian | #adventurousforever

- Music and video bring joy to the journey, turning every drive into a concert or movie night at a camp site: they elevate the vehicle from a mode of transport to a stage for personal moments and shared memories. For Di Bao, veteran UI/UX designer at Rivian, shaping the in-vehicle user interface is more than just a project; it’s been a chance to rethink the driving experience. “Every day feels like solving a puzzle,” she explains. “There are so many pieces—hardware, software, streaming apps. The challenge of fitting them together is what makes it fun.” Di’s focus is on making the interface intuitive, whether people are streaming Spotify, casting YouTube videos, listening to a favorite audiobook on Audible, or making hands-free calls. She loves watching the First Time User Experience (FTUE), a feature she helped build, come to life. Sometimes, she scrolls through YouTube videos of new Rivian owners lighting up as they interact with their new vehicle for the first time. “I see their excitement, and it makes all the hard work worth it,” Di says. “Our FTUE doesn’t just introduce them to the car; it welcomes them. It’s like saying, ‘This is yours. Let’s explore it together.’” At Rivian, the pace of work is fast and exciting. “In traditional car companies, you design something, and it might take five years to hit the market. Here, I can work on a feature today, and by next quarter I’ll see reviewers talking about it. That feedback loop is so motivating.” That same speed is tempered by the complexity of the software and design, which, by nature, demands constant collaboration across teams. Di often finds herself in brainstorming sessions where ideas fly freely between designers, engineers, and product managers. “Sometimes a designer will suggest something impractical,” she explains, “but it inspires someone else to think, ‘What if we tried it this way?’ It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about pushing each other to think beyond the obvious.” This shared mindset is something Di is genuinely grateful for. “Everyone here believes nothing is impossible. We’re not just looking at what other vehicles are doing; we’re asking, ‘What’s the most amazing thing we can create?’” For Di, Rivian is more than a job. It’s a place where creativity, technology, and passion converge, where every team member can contribute to a shared vision. “Here, everyone chimes in with their opinions. We’re all working toward the same vision, and everyone’s perspective matters.” As Di continues to work on infotainment features, she feels grateful for the culture of innovation and camaraderie. She’s not just designing features; she’s helping shape the future of automotive #technology, alongside a team that inspires her every day.
