Last week at the NIO Summit in Indianapolis, I shared breakfast with Ellen Roeder from RKD Group as we pondered the lost art of pausing before reacting to work messages. When communication is instantaneous, is every reaction a knee-jerk? So, I thought I’d take a dose of my own medicine and sit with my NIO Summit experience before sharing my thoughts. A few things stuck with me over the past week: MODERN VS LEGACY: We are turning the corner on nonprofit technology. It’s clearer than ever that dated, limiting, and unintuitive tools will only hold your organization back. There are more modern solutions than ever that will enable your team to do more. No matter what you choose, you don’t have to settle for something that looks (and acts) straight out of Windows 95. EMOTIONAL > TRANSACTIONAL: When it comes to donation forms, we’ve tested ourselves into a corner. For so long, the focus has been on limiting options and pushing individuals through as fast as possible. But with ads not working the way they used to, and more entities than ever fighting for your donor’s attention (and wallet), you need to compel action through powerful storytelling—the kind that gets the oxytocin flowing. So when it comes to AB testing, the focus is now where it rightfully should be: your value proposition. AI EVERYTHING: Naturally, AI was a big topic of conversation. But in some sense, it felt like a stand-in—a boogeyman of sorts—for a nonprofit’s generalized anxiety about the future. The fact of the matter is that AI has been a part of our lives for some time now—it was just called “machine learning” and was mostly hiding behind the scenes. While generative AI is an exciting breakthrough that you can and should incorporate into your daily work life, predictive AI is where nonprofits still have the most to gain. When it comes to using AI for marketing and fundraising, efforts should focus on the basics: 1.) collecting clean data and 2.) using powerful prediction engines (like ours at Classy) to guide your next action with a current or potential donor. As far as conferences go, NextAfter’s NIO Summit was top-notch. Not only was it well-orchestrated and genuinely fun, but it felt right-sized. There was one track to follow, so attendees had a truly shared experience. What’s more, vendors weren't off in a corner but instead a part of the action (swag tokens FTW). And we at Classy had a blast packing the house at Howl at the Moon.
