- Ever wondered what it takes to feed a whole zoo? Meet our lead keeper of commissary, Diana! You may have seen Diana and Will whipping up a meal for Josephine our six-banded armadillo in the commissary on our most recent Rhode Show feature! To watch, visit bit.ly/commissaryrhodeshowDiana and our other commissary keepers help prepare hundreds of delicious and nutritious diets for our animals every week. Our vet team creates specialized diet plans for all of our animals based on their weight and overall health, and our commissary helps prepare all of them daily with lots of fresh produce and high quality ingredients. We are so grateful to our Zoo supporters and donors who have continued to help us provide the best quality care and nutrition for our animals!
- 🪲 Exciting news from our conservation team! August's American burying beetle trap monitoring was a huge success. Over 300 beetles were marked! These amazing creatures are vital to our ecosystem as nature's recyclers. They play a crucial role in decomposing dead animals and returning nutrients to the soil. ♻️ This has been a 30-year project to reintroduce this federally protected species to its historic range, and we're thrilled to see their population growing! Thanks to your support, and our incredible partners: Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Nature Conservancy Block Island, USFWS, RI DEM, and Maria Mitchell, as well as the many volunteers and interns over the 30 years. Another awesome year on Nantucket Island bringing endangered species back to the wild!

- Serval smiles are the best smiles! This purrr-fect pair are acclimating well to their new habitat and spending time bonding and exploring. Be sure to say hello to Sav and Velma on your next visit!
- We had a wonderful Employee Appreciation Week! 🎉 Huge thanks to our amazing staff for all their hard work and dedication. We celebrated with delicious food trucks and lots of fun. You all are the heart of our Zoo!
- Huge news, tiny package! Two Eastern Box Turtles hatched at our Zoo this month, marking a major milestone for our breeding program. These little ones are the offspring of turtles rescued from the illegal pet trade, where they were snatched from their wild homes. Working closely with RI DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, we will continue to raise these turtles until they're strong enough to be considered for release to the wild. It's heartbreaking that poaching is putting our native turtle populations at risk. But we're proud to be part of the solution, providing a haven for these animals and working to prevent this cruel trade. The illegal trade in native species has devastating effects on our wild populations and happens right in our own backyards! As a Rapid Response Network partner, we work closely with partners to rescue turtles from the pet trade, provide expert care, and prepare them for release back into the wild.
- A burst of color to our rainy days. Tiny but mighty (weighing only half a gram!), between August and October, monarch butterflies will travel up to 3,000 miles from the US and Canada to the mountains of Mexico! These endangered creatures remind us of nature's resilience. To help these amazing insects, you can support their survival by planting native flowers, avoiding pesticides, and leaving fallen leaves for overwintering insects. Look for monarch caterpillars on milkweed leaves. Share your monarch sightings! Let's create a brighter future for these amazing creatures. Your RWPZoo is a proud partner with the AZA SAFE North American Monarchs program.
- Cue the cuteness overload, it’s International Golden Lion Tamarin Day! Don’t be fooled by their size, these pint sized cuties might only weigh 1.5lbs but they’re full of spirit. Though endangered, there’s hope! Over 150 zoos, including ours, are part of their incredible comeback story. Together, we’re raising their numbers to help boost their wild population. Habitat loss is a big threat, but with your help, we can turn the tide. Raise your voice for these little lions and support amazing organizations like SAVE THE GOLDEN LION TAMARIN.
