- When Captain Paul Weckman, head of military and veteran affairs for Sanford Health, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, he considered how he could turn his diagnosis into an opportunity to bless others. He is now fundraising to support veteran and military programs and services at Sanford. 100% of every gift will help honor the bravery and sacrifices of current and past military members through special initiatives. - Thursday was more than just a day for trick or treating at Sanford Health in Fargo. It was also the day the bone marrow transplant team successfully performed their 100th transplant. Before Sanford's program, patients had to travel to Minneapolis or Rochester for this procedure. Now, patients have options for treatment closer to home, at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. And soon, thanks to Sanford Health Foundation support, bone marrow transplant patients – many traveling from over 60 miles away – will have a home away from home at the Peltier Lodge, an on-campus patient lodging facility. We were thrilled to unveil our latest edition to the pink guitar display at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center – a signed FIREFLY guitar from Kory and the Fireflies! And how meaningful to do it during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, we auction off these guitars, signed at the Premier Center, at our Sanford Health Foundation Big Stars & Pink Guitars event in Sioux Falls. Since 2018, we've raised over $4 million to support local breast cancer patients. All proceeds directly benefit the Edith Sanford Breast Center.FIREFLY GUITARS | Kory Van Sickle | #breastcancerawarenessmonth - For patients who are far from home, the cancer journey can be difficult. For blood and bone marrow transplant patients, it can be especially challenging with up to six weeks of inpatient care followed by 30-100 days of outpatient care and monitoring. A new project aims to make the cancer journey easier. The Peltier Lodge is a new patient lodging facility to be located near the campus of the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. The facility will serve as a home away from home for cancer patients and their loved ones, extending the standard of excellence offered at Roger Maris today to every step of the cancer journey – from diagnosis through treatment to recovery. “A place for patient lodging will offer so much,” said Ryan Johnson, a bone marrow transplant patient. “Just to be able to have a community of people around who are all working through tough days – it will offer patients and their caregivers so much support and understanding.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3XBc79A
- “Everything about Emma’s life was normal until one afternoon when she woke up from a nap with a swollen eye and a lump on her right temple. Initially, we thought it was maybe allergies.” After a trip to the emergency room, doctors ordered a CT scan followed by additional testing. From there, doctors shared heartbreaking news with the Neu family: nine-month-old Emma had a rare and aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia. During her cancer journey, Emma endured two bone marrow transplants, months of chemotherapy, countless procedures and too many setbacks to count. Days became weeks and weeks turned into months, but Emma’s spirit refused to dim, thanks in part to kid-friendly touches throughout Sanford Children’s Hospital and programs like Child Life, which helps ease the fear and anxiety of kids who are hospitalized through education and therapeutic play. “From the animal paintings on the walls to the colorful ceiling tiles, the push car, kid-sized doors, PT Dan, the nurses, the Child Life staff and so much more, the Castle of Care wrapped around us in every way possible.” Read her story: https://bit.ly/3TCOHzh
