- 🏅 Shaping Campus Experiences Through Sport Facility Design 🏅 When working with academic institutions on the design of athletics, recreation and wellness facilities, we are often faced with the challenge of knitting large spaces into sensitive campus contexts. Through creative organization of building programs, contextually-responsive massing and material selection, and thoughtful landscape interventions, we are able to meet the dimensional requirements of these spaces while also reducing their perceived scale and impact on campus. For Deerfield Academy, we addressed a complex series of site constraints by stacking the program on three levels to take advantage of the topography and maximize views to the hills. The building form and material choices draw from the vernacular architecture of the surrounding historic village. At Middlebury College, the competition level of the field house sits eight feet below grade which mitigates the scale of the large volume facing the campus core while also allowing pedestrian level views into the venue from an exterior campus walk. The Racquet Center at Princeton University, which is nearing construction completion, inserts a sensitively-scaled bar of the program in front of a larger competition volume to create a gradual transition from the campus to the project’s indoor and outdoor competition venues.#SasakiDesign #SportsFacilityDesign #AthleticsAndWellness #CampusDesign #SustainableDesign

- Feast your eyes on this recent office transformation. Seeking to relocate their growing high-energy team, Toast came to Sasaki to design their future office headquarters. Sasaki's interior design team transformed the subleased existing office space into an environment that features a variety of flexible work areas, meeting rooms, and a café that showcase the Toast brand and support their teams. The new 125,000 sf space creates destinations to promote movement, activity, and community across the seven floors. To make the space uniquely Toast and celebrate their brand, Sasaki’s environmental graphic designers developed graphic interventions tailored to intended uses of different spaces. - At Sasaki, remediation is both a tool for restoring damaged landscapes and reimagining stronger, more vibrant futures for the communities they serve. How can neglected industrial landscapes encourage us to think creatively about managing industrial waste and creating new opportunities for recreation and learning? - Now in the fourth year at our 110 Chauncy studio, we are reflecting on our design decisions following the office renovation, recognizing that every project is an opportunity to address climate change and build resilience in our communities. Sasaki's new studio is a holistically designed space that supports our firm’s interdisciplinary and sustainable practice through its site selection, mechanical systems, use of low-carbon materials, and daily operations. The project was recently recognized by the IIDA New England design awards as a winning workspace. By choosing an existing building in Downtown Boston, we maximize opportunities for public transit and active commuting. Renovating the stairs and elevators, and incorporating the lowest-carbon materials while reusing existing furniture, we demonstrated a significant reduction in embodied carbon in the interior fit out compared with standard class A office spaces. Additionally, 110 Chauncy is now among the first high-rise existing building renovations in the city to install all-electric systems. - "We have a responsibility to create landscapes that not only inspire, but actively contribute to the health of our planet," says Michael Grove, FASLA. Sasaki joins the world's most influential landscape architecture firms to achieve the goals laid out in the American Society of Landscape Architects Climate Action Plan, most notably a commitment to a zero-emissions profession by 2040. - The proposal to build Hudson Yards West by Related Companies and Wynn Resorts represents a once-in-a-generation commitment to provide significant quality of life improvements for the neighborhood and enormous economic opportunity for the entire city. The centerpiece of the development is Hudson Green, designed by Sasaki and Hollander Design Landscape Architects, the new public garden park atop the Western Rail Yards will include a mix of open lawns, gardens, playscapes, and shaded groves, while Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is leading the master plan. Hudson Green takes inspiration from New York’s great legacy of dynamic parks and public open spaces. Reimagining a village green, the design creates shared open areas revealed through immersive landscapes. A series of gardens and open spaces create a vibrant park for the surrounding neighborhoods, an oasis for visitors to the city and for all New Yorkers. “The history and vibrancy of New York is most readily felt on the city’s streets, on the ground that connects us,” explains Philip Dugdale, Sasaki landscape architect and Associate Principal. “It’s this everyday surface that we often overlook. Hudson Green builds a new common ground, a richly layered landscape that brings us together, surprises us, and creates moments of rest and wonder.” 📷: ATCHAIN, Brick Visual, and Binyan Studios
- Today we celebrate the opening of the new South Campus Residence Hall and Dining Center at the University of Connecticut! This is the first capital project born out of Sasaki’s 2019 Campus Housing Plan. Bringing together architecture, landscape, and interiors, our integrated design creates new outdoor spaces for recreation and relaxation, as well as a new hub for student life.
From the state-of-the-art dining facility, to the community spaces, to the suite-style rooms, UConn's newest residence hall in South Campus has it all. -

ABC News recently produced a feature about New Orleans' Lincoln Beach and the grassroots activists who are revitalizing it. The beach was originally created for Black beachgoers during segregation; since its closure in 1964 the site has fallen into disrepair. Sage MIchael Pellet, Tricia Wallace and Reggie Ford have been working to clean up the beach, a Black Heritage Site, and organize community around its restoration. As Pellet says, "It's part of structural discrimination to be surrounded by water, with no access points." A beach with recreational water activities, he says, could generate new jobs for young people. Wallace says, "“This is the only place where you can walk through a forest, touch sand, and walk straight into water in New Orleans." The City of New Orleans selected Sasaki to design the project this summer, informed by regular community feedback. Phase One of the reopening is anticipated in 2025.https://lnkd.in/ek9a-E_2 #lincolnbeach #NOLB
Abandoned beach, once segregated, revitalized by community activists abcnews.go.com - A designer in Sasaki's Los Angeles studio, Jerolim Mladinov has taught architecture and design at Boston Architectural College and the University of Oregon College of Design. He believes the role of an architect is no longer confined to drafting plans or overseeing construction. Rather, it extends to being an educator, a mentor, and a facilitator of dialogues that shape the built environment in profound ways. - Have you heard? Monocle's The Urbanist podcast recently interviewed Ian Dickenson and Philip Dugdale about Wilmington Waterfront Promenade in the heart of Los Angeles. "Having grown up in Wilmington, I didn't even realize that we had water that close. And going to the beach was a treat...It wasn't until later in life that I realized, holy cow, wait, there's like water right there!" said Cecilia Moreno, an Angelino who now works at the Port of Los Angeles. Bringing the public to the waterfront in this otherwise industrialized area, and letting them see an economic engine of the city "is just a treat," she says. Philip Dugdale explains the decision to take visitors right down to the edge of the water with a stepped onyx-block landing rather than the more traditional sea wall: the approach "improved the resiliency of the site by raising the flood elevation of the park, but also allowed us to create an experiential quality to the water's edge that was forever changing and different depending on when the visitor came to the park." Give it a listen
