#ICYMI Here are the first 15 minutes of our recent investigative special on political violence for Scripps News. We traveled the country, gathering incredible stories from political figures and citizens who have been victimized by violence or threats. We exclusively spoke with the elderly man who was run over by an ATV while placing Trump campaign signs in his brother's front yard. We interviewed the state senator who had bullets whizzing by her bed and by her child's bed during a drive-by shooting. And we talked to a staffer who was feet away from a gunman when he opened fire on their small campaign office, just missing the candidate. We also spoke with the Capitol Police chief about how he's preparing his department for the upcoming election and beyond. We sorted through body camera footage, court documents, and police reports to show how prevalent threats and violence really are. You can find the whole special and our original three-part series here: https://lnkd.in/gvuyFSVE. - 🎉 We are so proud of our team at Scripps News, who took home the national news Emmy Award last night. 🎉 Their investigation, "Poisoned Water," a report on the Flint, Michigan, water crisis found that nearly a decade after one of the nation’s largest public health scandals was set in motion, many Flint residents were still waiting for the city to remove and replace the corroded pipes that have been leaching lead into the city’s water supply. Congratulations to the Scripps News team of journalists for receiving a national news Emmy Award last night for its investigation “Poisoned Water,” a report on the Flint, Michigan, water crisis. “This team did remarkable work, just as their colleagues at Scripps News do every day,” said Kate O'Brian, president of News at Scripps. “Scripps News is made up of fewer than 300 journalists who produce 16 hours of high-quality, objective content every day. I’m proud to see them honored.” Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/gCaegTW9Watch the winning story: https://lnkd.in/ewTG_27E #EmmyAwards - 🚨Tune in alert! 🚨
Exactly one month ago this group worked on night 2 of the Democratic National Convention as part of the Scripps News team in Chicago working hand in glove with our teams in Atlanta to bring our OTA and OTT viewers "down the middle coverage" which resulted in our highest viewership ever and that is not counting viewers from CTV or stations owned The E.W. Scripps Company. On Tuesday we're off to Springfield, Ohio for special coverage of the controversies that have enveloped that small city. It all starts at 7 am on "Morning Rush" continues through the day with reporting by Joe St. George, Dan Grossman and Maritsa Georgiou with Maritsa anchoring a special edition of "America Tonight" live in Springfield at 8 pm ET Kate O'Brian, Blake Fogg, Andrew Rafferty Alex Zuckerman Simon Kaufman Christina Hartman Serena Marshall - In our commitment to balanced reporting, Scripps News is proud to partner with extraordinary organizations that share our vision. These partnerships help us connect more deeply with our audience. Thank you ProPublica, Morning Brew, WorkingNation, POLITICO, OpenSecrets, SportsGrid, and Skift for your ongoing partnership. #journalism #scrippsnews Christina Hartman, Brian Donlon, Vanessa Strouse-Kenney, Kate O'Brian Linda Pattillo
In December of 2023, Vanessa Strouse-Kenney, Linda Patillo and I walked into the offices of ProPublica. Our idea was simple: a partnership combining our investigative resources on stories and expanding the audience for their award-winning reporting on our Scripps News programs. Last week, our two organizations through online, OTA and OTT distribution revealed the practices of Exeter Finance and how many of their borrowers were given the option of skipping payments on auto loans when they encountered financial trouble only to learn later they owed large lump sums at the end of their loans. Today "Morning Rush" offered up a look at two of ProPublica's new investigations one with Ziva Branstetter and the story of the Woman who died after being afraid to seek medical care with GA abortion laws (see below) and Debbie Cenziper for their expose on the dangerous breathing machines. Today at 4 pm on "Main & Wall" McKenzie Funk will join the program to discuss how Oregon’s largest natural gas company said It was "going green" but it turns out sells as much fossil fuel as before. Like Skift, Morning Brew, WorkingNation, POLITICO, OpenSecrets, SportsGrid, ProPublica has been a wonderful content partner. Thank you to all the reporters who have been on Scripps News bringing this important journalism to our audience and an appreciation to Editor-in-Chief Stephen Engelberg, Tyson Evans, Alexis Stephens, Alissandra Calderon, Charles Orenstein, and Mara Shalhoup for all your efforts in making this partnership so successful. - 🗳 Election day is around the corner and Scripps News continues to aggressively report the stories that concern our nation. A recent Ipsos/Scripps News poll, has received national pickup in more than two dozen publications including Forbes, CNN, Politico, The Hill, and Fox News. That poll found a majority of Americans support the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, including 25% of self-identified Democrats. The poll also found a majority are concerned that non-citizen voting will affect results of the 2024 election. Asked to choose who would do a better job handling immigrants, 44% of Americans selected President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris (34%). Immigration and inflation were the top issues among voters, according to the national poll conducted after last week’s presidential debate. Among registered voters, 71% said they worry that officials won’t accept the results of the election and 69% are concerned about foreign interference in the democratic process.
