The Seattle Human Services Department (HSD) lives out its mission, as one of the largest contributors to Seattle's safety net. HSD is responsible for investing hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to more than 200 community-based organizations and programs that support Seattle neighbors and communities each year. Through the lens of racial equity, HSD supports programs, initiatives, and policies that address six investment impact areas: 1) Preparing Youth for Success 2) Supporting Affordability and Livability 3) Addressing Homelessness 4) Promoting Public Health 5) Supporting Safe Communities 6) Promoting Healthy Aging This department serves as a funder, convener, and direct service provider to achieve positive results. HSD partners with community-based organizations, the public, and non-profit service providers to understand and address current and emerging human service needs, and to invest in the creation of a comprehensive and integrated regional human service system. Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell announced a 108millioninvestmentinaffordablehousing.Today,MayorBruceHarrellannounceda108 million investment in affordable housing, marking the first full allocation of funds from Seattle’s newly approved 2023 Housing Levy. This funding, awarded through the 2024 Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), will support the construction of 655 new affordable homes, an important step in increasing Seattle’s housing stock to meet growing demand and ensure long-term affordability. https://lnkd.in/grUnYSxt - According to the Washington State Office of the Attorney General, human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world today, tied with arms as the second-largest international criminal industry. As a grave human rights abuse, it breaks down families and communities, fuels organized crime, undermines public health, and creates opportunities for extortion and subversion. It affects individuals of every age, ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic background and disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous and migrant populations. A big thank you to Yasminda Dorrough, Director of Survivor Service at REST, for joining us to thank Mayor Bruce Harrell and Seattle City Councilmember Cathy Moore and her fellow councilmembers for proclaiming January 2025 to be Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Seattle.
