One of our favorite places to show up in the world: the bathroom. Last month, we had the opportunity to take over the bathrooms at Eudēmonia Summit—a first-of-its-kind health and wellness summit. So we turned them into a classroom. Throughout the space—on stall doors, near soap dispensers, over the urinals, on the mirrors—we placed moments of science that revealed an invisible story around the seemingly ordinary objects and actions we engage with daily.¹ A big thank you to our friends at Eudēmonia Summit and our Seed team for crafting, writing, and designing a science class in a bathroom. • ¹ A reminder that the microbiome is the critical interface or barrier between you and the world around us. The built environments (modern, human-made spaces like an office, your home, the grocery store) we interact with daily were not made for our biology, and they often disrupt our microbiomes and, in turn, our overall health. The good news: Our microbiome is dynamic and ever-responding to our environment and choices. While we can’t change the world around us, we can change how we live within it.

What if the smallest organisms on Earth could solve some of our biggest health challenges? In April, we opened applications for the Microbiome Accelerator program, launched in partnership with Nature Awards to fast-track groundbreaking microbiome research into real-world health applications. This initiative was designed to bridge the gap between discovery and impact, supporting the next wave of innovations in microbiome science by providing grants, expert guidance, and development support to advance their work from early discovery to commercial launch. Following a competitive global selection process, four visionary research teams were chosen as finalists to join us in London for an immersive four-day residential program, where they participated in specialized training and workshops focused on discovery, development, clinical validation, and go-to-market strategy. Our four team finalists also received a cash grant to support the commercialization of their research. The Impact: This year’s projects explored the extraordinary potential of microbes to address critical health challenges, including: 🦠 Infectious Disease Prevention: Dr. Ritika Kar Bahal is exploring microbial innovations to address respiratory infections in children. 🧫 Cancer Therapies: Christopher Johnston is advancing novel microbial approaches for gastrointestinal cancer treatment. 🌸 Vaginal Health Solutions: Hui Wei (魏辉) is developing innovative microbial treatments for common vaginal infections. ⚖️ Gut and Metabolic Health: Neil Surana is investigating microbial interventions with potential in weight management and broader digestive health. Can science create the same hype as streetwear? We’ve all seen the energy surrounding a drop—waitlists, lines around the block, the constant refreshing of webpages. We want to know: Can we build the same excitement—but for learning? Magic, our “learn-to-earn” drop program, takes cues from streetwear but with a Seed twist. What if a microbe could help curb the climate crisis? Meet UTEX-3222 (Cyanobacterium aponinum var vulcano), A.K.A. Chonkus, a cyanobacterium uncovered during our flagship expedition with The Two Frontiers Project to the volcanic CO₂ seeps of Vulcano, Sicily. 🌋 The findings from this discovery—now published in American Society for Microbiology’s Applied and Environmental Microbiology—reveal a microbe capable of contributing to the future of carbon capture and inspiring new innovations in microbial research. In 2022, our environmental research initiative, SeedLabs, partnered with The Two Frontiers Project to tap ‘extreme’ microbes that could unlock new methods of carbon capture. On our first flagship expedition, the team of researchers sampled water, sediment, and other microbial sources around volcanic CO₂ seeps. This led to the identification of a novel photosynthetic cyanobacterium highly efficient at consuming CO₂, demonstrating traits that could potentially outperform leading carbon-capturing organisms. Chonkus is like other photosynthetic cyanobacteria in that it consumes CO₂ and incorporates it into its cells. However, what sets UTEX-3222 apart is its rapid, high-density growth, which allows it to consume CO₂ more efficiently than most other similar currently known cyanobacteria. It is also 5 to 10 times larger than the average microbial cell, allowing it to sink quickly after consuming CO₂, sequestering the carbon away at the bottom of the ocean (or the test tube, so it can be captured!). 🧪😉 “Feasibly, if you can use the mechanisms through which Chonkus and other similar microbes consume CO₂, you can do a couple of different things: You can either sequester carbon—some people suggest sinking it to the bottom of the ocean—or capture it from the air and bury it somewhere… Alternatively, you could focus on turning carbon into something valuable. For example, even as people continue driving cars and emitting CO₂, microbes could capture some of that carbon and turn it into useful products, like bioplastics or, one day, biofuels—anything a microbe can produce,” explains Dr. Braden Tierney, Executive Director of The Two Frontiers Project.
