- Our board chair Stan McChrystal spoke about the value of national service and its ability to bridge America's divides on CBS Sunday Morning today: "Young Americans come together for a year or two and work together in efforts as varied as health care, education, conservation, the military or other community projects. ...They work alongside other young Americans, serving fellow citizens and learning about each other and themselves. So how could this work? First it exists today in the many programs like AmeriCorps, City Year, and AmeriCorps VISTA but needs to be expanded. A public-private partnership providing a central funding for stipends and other needs, creating programs and opportunities, and establishing a set of supporting policies like educational grants and job placements for national service veterans is needed. It costs money and it takes effort, but the benefits of producing better citizens who are more connected to each other is worth any amount and the time to get serious is now." We are proud to be working to expand and enhance existing #nationalservice programs to bring this inspiring vision to life and make national service part of growing up in America.https://lnkd.in/eYSe9xHC

- 🏡 Did you know? The average age of an owner-occupied home in the U.S. is 40 years old. Four decades of wear-and-tear from heat, rain, wind, and cold is bound to require some need for upkeep. That’s where weatherization comes into play. It’s National Weatherization Day, and service years are an increasingly vital piece of the weatherization effort. Across the country, service year programs are partnering with industry partners and state weatherization agencies to train the next generation of green workforce professionals. This special coloring book follows Maya, an Energy Auditor, and others in their work to weatherize a family home - a great way for kids and classrooms to learn about home weatherization! Thanks to Green Workforce Connect, a collaboration from our friends at Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and partners, for creating the coloring book. https://lnkd.in/g_DyMDQK #weatherization #serviceyears #nationalservice #greenjobs
- It’s one week until election day. Do you find yourself asking, “How can our country possibly come together, again?” Tony Lucero, MBA, Director, Bridging Divides, at Service Year Alliance joins Jennifer O. Leshnower, Bridging & Democracy Advisor, at AmeriCorps, for an extended conversation about bridging divides through national service. As service year alums, each of them know firsthand how small acts of service can lead to big change. The work they lead now at their respective organizations explores how national service can be a unique platform to bring people together despite the seemingly intractable divides that too often keep us apart. Together, they discuss: ➡ What “bridging” means, in practice and as part of the national service movement. ➡ How Service Year Alliance and AmeriCorps approach this work and why it’s so critical at this moment. ➡ What’s next on the horizon to take “bridging” to scale across the national service field. You can listen to the conversation wherever you get your podcasts, or here on the SCI website, where you can also find some great resources that they mention on the show: https://lnkd.in/gFTXZSQtSpecial thanks to David Crowley and SCI Social Capital Inc. for hosting this conversation.

- We’re out today with a new poll, conducted with our friends at Data for Progress. The takeaways are clear. Young people (ages 18-26) are concerned about climate change (81%) and want to do something about it. Just 29% think we’re doing enough. ➡ Here’s some good news: pathways like the American Climate Corps and climate-focused registered apprenticeships are hugely popular, once folks learn about them. In fact, green jobs as a sector are seen as a promising opportunity to launch a career. Yet, just 38% say they’re somewhat familiar with the opportunities available to them. This comes as a severe worker shortage looms on the horizon. The World Economic Forum predicts that green jobs are expected to comprise 14% of total US jobs by 2030. We need more skilled workers to fill this demand and we need more Americans dedicated to addressing the climate crisis. National service should be part of the solution. - Last week, #nationalservice champions in Congress introduced the Promoting Service Through AmeriCorps (PSA) Act of 2024. In addition to reauthorizing AmeriCorps programs through 2029, the legislation includes a commonsense set of reforms that enhance the corps member experience and care for the more than 1.3 million AmeriCorps Alums.
