How should Earth defend against a future incoming asteroid of this magnitude? Apophis is 340 meters wide, about the same as the height of the Empire State Building. If it were to hit Earth, it would cause wholesale destruction hundreds of miles from its impact site. The energy released would equal that from tens or hundreds of nuclear weapons, depending on the yield of the device. Luckily, Apophis won’t hit Earth in 2029. Instead, it will pass by Earth safely at a distance of 19,794 miles (31,860 kilometers), about one-twelfth the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Nevertheless, this is a very close pass by such a big object, and Apophis will be visible with the naked eye. If approved at a key meeting next year, the robotic spacecraft, known as the Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (Ramses), will rendezvous with the asteroid in February 2029.

The chatbot revolution has left our world awash in AI-generated text: It's so absurdly abundant, it has infiltrated our news feeds, term papers, and inboxes. As chatbots get better and better, it will only get more difficult to tell whether words were strung together by a human or an algorithm. Some companies offer services to identify AI-generated text by analyzing the material, while others say their tools will “humanize“ your AI-generated text and make it undetectable. Another approach: Adding some sort of watermark or content credential to text from the start, which lets people easily check whether the text was AI-generated. New research from Google DeepMind, described today in the journal Nature, offers a way to do just that. SynthID-Text works by discreetly interfering in the generation process: It alters some of the words that a chatbot outputs to the user in a way that’s invisible to humans but clear to a SynthID detector. However, the researchers acknowledge in their paper that it’s still easy to alter a Gemini-generated text and fool the detector. 🎉✨ Still in absolute disbelief that my 'XXPrize' concept for Women's Health won first place at the XPRIZE Global Visioneering Conclave. After centuries of women's health being overlooked and understudied, what began as my vision to revolutionize our understanding of female bodies has now been selected to become the next XPRIZE competition. As the Health domain Braintrust champion for this idea, I developed and pitched the concept through multiple stages over months. The contest was extraordinary - over 50 concepts proposed across five domains (Biodiversity & Conservation, Climate & Energy, Deep Tech & Quantum, Health, and Learning & Society). The final competition pitted twenty incredible visions head-to-head on stage across multiple pitches and intensive Q&A sessions over two days. Our winning concept? A moonshot challenge to fundamentally transform women's health by optimizing ovarian function across female lifespan. This isn't about reproduction – it's about revolutionizing how we understand and support women's health at every age, from before puberty through end of life. We're literally a century behind where we need to be - women live longer than men but spend more time in poor health, directly because their ovaries age faster than other tissues. We need an exponential solution, and that's exactly what this prize will deliver. This victory represents a paradigm shift in how we approach women's health. For too long, ovaries have been viewed through the narrow lens of fertility, when in reality they are the architects of health in female bodies. #Ovaries are for more than babymaking! The XXPrize will catalyze innovation, drive investment, and fundamentally change how we understand and optimize women's health. Norway’s sizable oil and gas deposits have made it one of the wealthiest countries in the world. That’s why it might come as a surprise that it’s the first country to have more electric vehicles than gasoline-powered ones. 🚙 What would it take for your country to follow their lead? Transportation is the single biggest contributor to climate change in the US—accounting for 28 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. So, the rise of electric vehicles has been one of the biggest success stories in the effort to clean up the economy. The Norwegian government has given generous subsidies to promote adoption, including tax rebates that bring the cost of electric vehicles down to similar levels as conventional vehicles, exemptions from some tolls, and an extensive public network of free chargers. Electric vehicle sales have been highly concentrated in three main markets—Europe, the US, and China—accounting for roughly 95 percent of all purchases. In the US, new registrations grew 40 percent last year to hit 1.4 million, while Europe saw a 20 percent increase to 3.2 million. However, sales have been flagging in recent months, even as production capacity continues to ramp up. This has some worried that concerns around pricing and charging infrastructure could cap consumers’ willingness to make the switch.
