Beyond beautiful buildings, we pride ourselves in getting to know the communities in which we work. And in Washington, D.C., as part of our North Capitol Crossroads Vision Plan, we’ve taken it a step further, producing a podcast miniseries with the D.C. Office of Planning that shares the lives, ideas, and stories of the people representing D.C.’s communities. Through this podcast, we've broadened engagement with District residents, capturing elements of the area’s history and present-day life while offering a glimpse into its future. And for it, the “District Crossroads” podcast series won the Creative Community Outreach Award from Lambda Alpha International Land Economics Society's George Washington Chapter! The North Capitol Crossroads Vision Plan imagines a cohesive identity through planning, design, and development that will transform the North Capitol Crossroads and provide an interconnected neighborhood anchored by places to live, work, learn, and heal. Learn about our work and listen to the podcast below. MORE → bit.ly/3ChISSd📷: Courtesy of D.C. The annual events offer rare opportunities for behind-the-scenes access to architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites. In New York, our team led tours of Manhattan West and the High Line – Moynihan Connector, Lever House, and the “Adaptations 2.0” exhibit at Governors Island. In Chicago and London, we opened our studios, allowing visitors a peek into the design process—check it out below. 📷: Francisco Lopez de Arenosa, Tiffany Truong, and Aydan Gasimli Chicago Architecture Center #OHC2024 #OpenHouseChicago #OpenHouse2024 #ohnywknd

- Today at #BalREc, Bulgaria’s annual investment and real estate market conference, Partner Thomas Behr unveiled SOM’s competition-winning design for a new mixed-use development in the capital city of Sofia. Sofia Square is a new 345,000-square-meter development that draws inspiration from Sofia’s surrounding natural landscape to create new vibrant public spaces, as well as retail and residential buildings. The project centers on the reinvention of a historic industrial building designed by Gustave Eiffel. SOM was chosen as the winner of an international competition organized by GK Bulgaria, aimed at envisioning a new future for a brownfield site in the west of the city. MORE → bit.ly/3YCSChx📷: © SOM

How do you design space for research and innovation in the growing field of artificial intelligence? At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, our recently completed Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing not only serves as a dynamic hub for education and research in computer science and AI, but also symbolizes its outsized importance to the future of the Institute. In a recent piece in Architectural Record, Partners Colin Koop and Carrie Moore explain how the building’s transparent double-skin facade—a high-performance, closed-cavity design that contributes to the project’s LEED Platinum certification target—brings transparency while fostering innovation and collaboration. Conceived as elevated glass shingles connecting two interior pavilions, the building establishes a monumental and connective presence on MIT’s campus, transforming the pedestrian experience. - The U.S. Consulate General Dhahran received a Merit Award for Excellence in Architectural Design as part of the 2024 AIA International Design Awards. Located in a central district of Dhahran on Saudi Arabia’s east coast, the new consulate contributes to its urban setting by interpreting regional building methods in a contemporary way. The organization of elements on the flat, rectangular site takes cues from traditional Saudi Arabian settlements, which feature tight clusters of structures along narrow streets. Award winners were named during the AIA International Conference in Hong Kong, where Design Principal Nicolas Medrano, AIA also shared his insights on envisioning transit oriented developments for people, nature, and culture. Recently featured as one of the “10 Architectural Wonders of Dubai” by LUXUO, today we look back at the 75-story Cayan Tower. While the skyscraper’s floor plates are all identical, each is slightly rotated against the story below it, producing a full 90-degree twist over the course of the tower’s 307-meter rise. Writes LUXUO, "Cayan Tower has become an emblem of modern architectural ingenuity in Dubai, showcasing the city’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering." Learn about the project and see the full list in the link below. And in Pasadena, 10 West Walnut, a five-story, creative mixed-use building won a Workplace Design Award. Learn about the awards and projects below. MORE → bit.ly/4f69Tqa📷: 1. - For a new report on how London can face its infrastructure challenges, NLA invited SOM’s Adam Semel to discuss a transformative idea: turning tall buildings into batteries. In the story, Semel explains how Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage systems use surplus energy to lift heavy weights, which create potential energy that can later be converted into electricity when lowered. “We quickly came to understand the impact of this technology for energy security, but also we marveled at the possibilities for how skyscrapers as ‘batteries’ could contribute to a sustainable built environment,” he wrote. Read Semel’s perspective on how energy-storing skyscrapers can provide a missing link in the transition to a clean power grid. MORE → bit.ly/3AlNHcxImage: Pictury © Energy Vault Holdings, Inc.
