About us
The Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) was established in 1985 as the National Science Resources Center (NSRC) under the sponsorship of two prestigious institutions: the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2012, our name changed to the Smithsonian Science Education Center to reflect our mission: to transform and improve the learning and teaching of science for K-12 students. We are dedicated to the establishment of effective science programs for all students. To contribute to that goal, the SSEC builds awareness for K-12 science education reform among state and district leaders and Ministries of Education; conducts programs that support the professional growth of K-12 teachers and school leaders; and engages in research and curriculum development, including our comprehensive K-8, research-based science curriculum program: Science and Technology Concepts (STC), Science and Technology Concepts Middle School (STCMS), STC-Kindergarten, and our newest curriculum, Smithsonian Science for the Classroom. We have impacted all 50 of the United States and supported the systemic needs of over 1000 schools, districts, states, and teams from Ministries of Education across 43 countries through our proven Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) model, which we now know leads to higher student achievement in science and improved science teaching and learning. 📣 Educators worldwide can now apply to field test a new Smithsonian community research guide on access and accessibility! Learn more about this free professional development opportunity: https://s.si.edu/Access-FT... Through this new program, educators with students ages 11-18 can field test the new Smithsonian Science for Global Goals: Access guide and offer their expertise on how our activities can be improved to better serve their students and community’s needs! The Access guide will help youth learn about systems all people need such as food, housing, transportation, education, and healthcare. Students will be supported to use a social science lens, to investigate barriers to accessing these systems within their own community. They will then explore ways they can use STEM innovations to remove barriers to access and support accessibility. As a field tester you will be asked to: 💻 Attend a 1-hour virtual field test orientation in Mid-October 📗 Review 11-12 pages of written material monthly (November-April) ✏️ Implement at least one activity on access with your students monthly 💬 Optional: Attend a 1-hour monthly PLC meetings to share feedback, network, and discuss educational best practices Field testing a Smithsonian Science for Global Goals guide is also an opportunity for FREE professional development. All educators in this cohort will be named in the credits of the published guide and given a certificate acknowledging their contribution. The Power of a Teacher Who Dreams Big smithsonianmag.com - Introducing "Climate Literacy: Essential Principles for Understanding and Addressing Climate Change!" Designed with public input by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), this guide for educators, communicators, and decision-makers explores how the climate system works, how human actions influence climate, and how climate influences people and other parts of the Earth system. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Smithsonian Institution, represented by Carol O'Donnell, the Douglas M. Lapp and Anne B. Keiser Director of the Smithsonian Science Education Center, were co-leads of the interagency federal team at USGCRP who worked to update this climate guide to reflect current climate science, engagement, workforce development, education methods, and include a focus on informed climate decisions. “We know from hundreds of listening sessions held over the past year that educators and youth are hungry for resources, knowledge, and skills to address climate change," said Carol O’Donnell. "This guide will transform how climate science is addressed in classrooms and communities across the country.” ➡️ The guide is available in dynamic, accessible web, and PDF formats.
