About us

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida. The Cummer was established in 1958, when art collector, garden enthusiast, and civic leader Ninah Cummer bequeathed her art collection and riverfront home, which she owned with her husband Arthur, to create a museum. Today, the core collection of 60 pieces from Mrs. Cummer's estate has grown to include 5,000 works of art. The 1.5 acres of historic gardens, set against the backdrop of the St. Johns River, serves as a centerpiece of beauty for all to enjoy. In addition, Art Connections, the Museum's nationally recognized interactive education center, enhances the cultural learning of more than 40,000 students annually. The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is committed to engage and inspire through the arts, gardens, and education.

"Spirit in the Land" opens this Saturday, November 9, at the Cummer Museum! This extraordinary contemporary art exhibition examines today’s urgent ecological concerns from a cultural perspective, demonstrating how intricately our identities and natural environments are intertwined. Through their artwork, 30 artists show us how rooted in the earth our most cherished cultural traditions are, how our relationship to land and water shapes us as individuals and communities. The works reflect the restorative potential of our connection to nature and exemplify how essential both biodiversity and cultural diversity are to our survival. "Spirit in the Land" is organized by Trevor Schoonmaker, Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans Director, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Lead Support for "Spirit in the Land" is provided by the Ford Foundation. Major support for "Spirit in the Land" is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The 2024 Arts For All Festival was a huge success! A community collaboration since 1995, this dynamic program welcomed approximately 350 children onsite at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, plus 2,240 children virtually! Thanks to all our partners who support this great festival AND the hundreds of volunteers that donate their time to make a difference for these students. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eArqNEEAs we approach the heat of summer, April represents an inflection point in the rhythm of gardens. The Azaleas have finished blooming and the cool-season annuals that defined the color in the gardens all winter are starting to fade. This is the time of year that most gardens begin to ease into the stalwart plants of summer. Traditionally in Jacksonville, this has meant a reliance on heat-tolerant bedding or tropical foliage plants. Summer is not considered a time of floral abundance in North Florida landscapes. Here at the Museum, we practice a different style of gardening. Our aim, especially in the English Garden where we’re seeking a “cottage” aesthetic, is to ensure that there remains a complex mixture of flowering annuals, punctuated by perennials for texture and structure, that carry throughout the summer, lending a sense of exuberance and abundance. We had such a busy last few days at the Museum (with many more in weeks ahead!) However, our Slow Art Day celebration yesterday was a perfect reminder us there's no better time than the present to slow down and look closely at what is around us!
Our Gallery Hosts and Docents teamed up to celebrate Slow Art Day today, an international initiative designed to encourage visitors to slow down and look closely at works of art. Docent and Gallery Host pairs facilitated conversation with visitors at 4 permanent collection works, building close looking tools for visitors to take with them through the rest of their visit.
