- “Developing new perennial grains that persist year over year opens up unprecedented opportunities for farmers to greatly improve soil health as a natural outcome of agriculture. But we need policymakers, investors, business leaders, chefs, and researchers to take serious steps toward making soil health a fundamental part of our institutional approach to food and agriculture.” - Tim Crews, Chief Scientist & Director of the International Initiative at The Land Institute Our soils can serve as a dependable carbon-storing resource to help meet national and global climate goals. Continued policy support to establish widespread perennial agriculture practices will help ensure that food production is seen as a valuable climate solution. - Perennial agriculture, including perennial grains, agroforestry, and working grasslands, can serve as a tool to transform our agricultural system into one that reduces emissions and carbon-intensive farming practices and prepares the food system for the realities of the changing climate. Climate change will amplify declining yields and soil fertility. Perennial crops, like fruit and nut orchards, berry and nut shrubs, Kernza® perennial grain, and diverse pasture systems, live on the landscape for many years and can help reverse these trends, create pollinator habitat, and increase biodiversity if they get the funding and policy support they need for research and adoption. Discover how perennial crops can enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services at Civil Eats.https://lnkd.in/gSdKfj22
- Major research efforts are underway globally to significantly increase the development of perennial grain crops worldwide, including Kernza®, rice, sorghum, wheat, oilseeds, beans and pulses. Farmers are also deeply involved in the agronomic and operational adaptation of these new grains. Further investments in crop development and coordination efforts between business leaders, food companies, and policymakers help ensure that perennial grains support agriculture in a changing climate while feeding people and providing new revenue streams for farmers. - “Our rate of progress in Kernza® development is accelerating. It took our ancestors 1,000 years to domesticate most of our crops. We must deliver in decades.” - Lee DeHaan, Lead Scientist, Kernza Domestication Program Accelerating perennial grain development of crops like Kernza is crucial to ensuring a secure, climate-adapted food system in a hotter, drier world. Learn how Kernza is emerging as a natural climate solution with proven co-benefits like improved soil health and water quality. Read more at US Nature4Climate.https://lnkd.in/gw7PkTwj

Brewers around the country are helping change agriculture by utilizing perennial grains like Kernza® in new beers that promote healthy soil, clean water, and climate resilience. With increased adoption of perennial grains by food and beverage makers and investments in perennial agriculture research and supply chain development, we can develop more robust markets to realize ecological, economic, and climate benefits across US landscapes. We’re excited to announce the launch of two certified organic beers that are bright, crisp and wildly drinkable: Patagonia Provisions x Deschutes Brewery Kernza® Lager and Non-Alcoholic Kernza® Golden Brew, which is the first certified organic non-alcoholic craft beer brewed in the United States! Our shared mission with Patagonia Provisions is to shift the brewing industry toward more responsible practices, aiming to expand the use of Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC™) and organic ingredients in beer. These practices can enhance economic stability for farmers and reduce dependency on costly synthetic inputs, all the while rebuilding damaged soil. Both brews are made with organic Kernza® (a soil-saving, carbon-capturing perennial grain), certified organic hops, certified organic malted 2-row barley, and Regenerative Organic Certified® rye. The ingredients are grown in ways that improve soil health, minimize erosion, preserve biodiversity and protect waterways. In other words, they’re radically responsible! We'd like to extend a special thanks to our ingredient suppliers and farmers: Mad Agriculture & Perennial Promise Growers Cooperative, Admiral Maltings, Briess Malt & Ingredients Co., Roy Farms, Hopsteiner, and Imperial Yeast. Visit the beer finder on our website to find them near you and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/gexpDFky
