Kelsi Knoche, RN, is one of the most recent winners of the DAISY Extraordinary Nurse Award! Her nomination came from Lisa Heideman with the Midwest Transplant Network. Knoche helped a patient's daughter plan and execute a wedding in her father's hospital room. The patient’s two daughters were dealing with the difficult choice of moving him to comfort care while also trying to support his decision to be an organ and tissue donor. On the day leading up to his planned extubating, one of the daughters asked Knoche if she would help with her upcoming wedding a little earlier than expected. Heideman wrote, “Without hesitation, Knoche agreed and proceeded to help make a tragic situation into a beautiful opportunity for this young woman to get married while her father could take part." “Not only did this nurse provide the best clinical care to this family, but they also helped them to create a memory they will treasure forever,” Heideman wrote in her nomination. “Knoche’s nursing colleagues were blown away by her care and attention to detail, her poise and professionalism to ensure this woman would be able to be married in the presence of her father.” Nominate a nurse for a DAISY Extraordinary Nurse Award: https://bit.ly/3CkaypY

Congratulations to Brie Arello, RN, who was recently chosen to receive the DAISY Extraordinary Nurse Award! She works on Cambridge 9A in acute leukemia and was nominated by the girlfriend of a terminally ill cancer patient who says Arello consoled her when she received the unfortunate news of his condition. “Brie went above and beyond when she sat with me while I cried, making sure I wasn’t alone. She treated me as if I was one of her family. She comforted me better than any nurse or doctor had in our entire year long, terrifying cancer journey,” she explains. “Even though we were only on the Hematology/Oncology Unit for a couple days, I will never forget the kindness that this nurse showed me in one of the darkest hours of my life! I will hold Brie close to my heart forever.”
This past weekend, near 100 volunteers from the health system, including employees and their family members, laid wreaths at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Employees and others donated 719 wreaths. This is an incredibly special event for many employees who want to fulfill the mission of Wreaths Across America, which is to remember, honor and teach.

Congratulations to Leann Fisher, BSN, RN, the latest recipient of the DAISY Extraordinary Nurse Award. She is a perioperative nurse who works with OBGYN patients, including the one who wrote the letter nominating Fisher. The patient described the sadness she experienced the day she underwent a surgical procedure following her miscarriage. "After loss people don't know what to say, because there are no words to ease the pain," the patient wrote. "After my D&C, this nurse sat with me and let me cry. I felt heard and seen in a moment when I felt like others treated it as just another day. This nurse was truly a blessing to have in that moment and I am grateful for nurses like them."
