I still get nervous. For the big moments. But I've found ways to stop it overwhelming me. These are the moments: - Calls with clients. - Keynote presentations. - Podcast interviews, as host or guest. - Making the final touches to an article, e.g. in HBR. I feel a bit nervous. I can feel my heart rate increase (Engaged not stressed according to my ŌURA ring), my mouth a little dry. It shows I want to do my best work. I've created a simple system that works every time (and takes only a few mins): - Preparing well. You can't skip this. - Making sure there's space before and after the moment. - Making sure I'm hydrated (but not too much!). - Getting control of my breathing. - Relaxing my body, e.g. stretches. - Remembering moments I enjoyed in the past. - Writing down niggles or problems that could clutter my brain. - Visualising how it will feel afterwards. - Believing that we will do good work together. - Smiling (naturally). I felt this way yesterday when speaking with the brilliant Topaz Adizes, curator of the Skin Deep 'an Emmy award-winning experience design studio exploring human emotion, intimacy and connection in relationships.' You can watch the conversations on youtube via the link below - I bet you'll be moved in some way or other when you do. He's created groundbreaking work; he's an expert in all things relationships and conversations; and his films are very high quality. So he's set a high bar. I hope I did him justice.
