Two major developments that recently topped out in Center City—a state-of-the-art office tower and a sprawling life sciences lab—are reshaping Philadelphia’s skyline. Set to be insurance company Chubb’s largest North American office, 2000 Arch Street (pictured at top) is an 18-story, 550,000-square-foot tower built on a former parking lot. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services to Stantec for the project, developed by Parkway Corporation. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor. Designed to LEED Platinum standards, the building will house 3,200 employees, including at least 1,250 new positions. Completion is scheduled for 2026. Thornton Tomasetti is also providing structural engineering services for 3201 Cuthbert Street, the city’s largest life sciences building. RAMSA | Robert A.M. Stern Architects is the design architect, Kendall/Heaton Associates, Inc. is the architect of record and Hunter Roberts Construction Group is the general contractor. Developed by Gattuso Development Partners, the 11-story, 520,000-square-foot tower will offer a mix of specialized research, laboratory and office space for academic and commercial use. Other features include expanded 16- to 24-foot floor-to-floor heights, a column-free lobby, fourth-floor landscaped terrace with a two-story covered loggia below and rooftop outdoor terrace/event space topped by a steel canopy. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the project is on track for shell completion in March 2025. Tenants will include Drexel University and SmartLabs. -

When we last checked in on our New York Yankees fans, there was excitement in the air and a certainty that their hometown baseball team would emerge victorious against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. While the first game was a close one, the Dodgers ultimately pulled through and went on to win the next two games as well. There was a valiant comeback by the Yankees in Game 4, but the momentum didn’t carry into Game 5, where the Dodgers clinched the title of 2024 World Series Champions. But fair is fair, and while our New York office Yankees fans might have nothing nice to say about the Dodgers right now, they’re gracious enough to make good on the terms of the bet with our Los Angeles office, where the loser must don the apparel of the winning team for a photo. When you don’t want to be seen in the enemy’s colors, it’s helpful to have Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani fatheads on hand. Congratulations to our Los Angeles staff, who watched the Dodgers' victory parade from our office, but maybe don’t get too comfortable. When asked about the tough loss, New York Executive Assistant Yacenia Young said, “See you next year. Well, I don’t know if the Dodgers will make it back to the World Series, but the Yankees will sure be there.” -

With the building sector contributing up to 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, designers have a responsibility to act to combat the negative impacts of climate change. In the season finale of our “Here’s How: Embodied Carbon” podcast (https://lnkd.in/eK2eyq_p), Senior Principal and Structural Engineering Practice Co-Leader Scott Schneider talks about Thornton Tomasetti’s holistic climate action strategy, how it aligns with the firm’s purpose and values and which approaches have the greatest impact. Scott is leading the effort to train all our structural engineers in embodied carbon assessments and overseeing the firm’s involvement in the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment. He also discusses his career path, why he is passionate about sustainability and resilience and how they became a key consideration for projects. You can find this and past episodes, hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Podbean and Spotify.#Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #HeresHowClimateAction #HeresHowPodcast #StructuralEngineering - It’s been some 25 years since texting became a thing, the Chicago Bulls won its sixth NBA title and “The Matrix” hit the big screen. It was also a quarter-century since our Newark office first opened its doors. Recently, members of our Newark team, both past and present, celebrated the office’s silver anniversary along with Thornton Tomasetti colleagues, clients, project partners and friends. “From the structural design of local landmarks like MetLife Stadium and Prudential Center and the modernization of the iconic Empire State Building to smaller projects that enable our clients to achieve their goals, this office has made significant contributions to the built environment in the region and beyond,” Senior Principal and Newark Office Director Jun Yu said. “This milestone is not only a time for recognizing our achievements, but for looking ahead to continued innovation, collaboration and growth.” Congratulations! - There’s always room for improvement, even for landmark structures. The latest issue of the Steel Institute of New York’s Metals in Construction magazine looks at revitalization projects at two New York City classics. Managing Principal Eli Gottlieb discusses the extensive modernization program at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ David Geffen Hall, which updated the venue’s 306,000-square-foot interior space and improved the concert-going experience. Over at 550 Madison, formerly known as the AT&T Building, a privately owned public space was transformed into a four-season garden with the addition of a 70-foot-tall glass-and-steel canopy. Associate Principal Marcin March, talks about the technical challenges of the project. Read both articles here https://lnkd.in/eJpMWaBX
- The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning is leading to increased efficiency, productivity and creativity. At the 2024 National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) Summit in Las Vegas this week, Chief Technology Officer Robert Otani will take part in the keynote panel, “AI’s Role in Shaping the Future of Structural Engineering,” sharing insights into AI’s role in structural engineering, emerging trends and potential future impacts. Rob will also participate in the session “Embracing AI: Culture Change, Legal Landscape, and Technical Tactics,” which will focus on the potential of AI for business growth. Meanwhile, Jennifer Greenawalt, associate, will present the session, “Repurposing Existing Office Buildings: Structural Lessons Learned,” exploring the process of adaptive reuse. - While wood is being used in everything from tall towers to long-span sports venues, tech giant Microsoft is taking it in a new direction. It is using cross-laminated timber in the construction of two data centers in Northern Virginia. The project team, which includes Thornton Tomasetti as structural engineer and design architect Gensler, estimates that by using CLT in the new data centers, it will reduce embodied carbon by 35% compared to a conventional steel structure and by 65% over precast concrete. You can read more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/eh_RdN_E #datacenters #timber #structuralengineering
- October has officially come to a close, but before we start daydreaming about Thanksgiving feasts, it’s time to take a pause and recognize the Halloween spirit displayed across our offices this week. From coast to coast and across the pond, our people showed off their spooktacular creativity with festive costumes, activities and decorations. Our San Francisco office put their carving skills on display with a pumpkin decorating contest, while in Los Angeles, the cereal killer’s reign of terror took first place in the costume competition, with Clark Kent and his alter ego coming in second. Our Pune office went all out to create a very festive, and creepy, workspace, and in Philadelphia team members enjoyed helping trick-or-treaters fill their candy bags. We hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday and is enjoying the best part about today—all that leftover candy. Happy belated Halloween! Boo #Halloween2024
- It’s East Coast versus West Coast in more ways than one as the New York Yankees battle it out against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the title of 2024 World Series Champion. It’s a Thornton Tomasetti tradition to make a friendly inter-office wager when the hometown teams of our offices compete in a major sports event. And with die-hard baseball fans in both our New York and Los Angeles offices, the stakes are certainly high. While the Yanks and the Dodgers haven’t played against each other for the Commissioner’s Trophy since 1981, our experts are predicting a long and exciting series. “It’s going to be Yankees in seven games, because the Dodgers don’t have the stamina,” Senior Principal Matthew Kmetz said. “The first two games in Los Angeles will be a split, then the Yanks will take two out of the three games in the Bronx. The Dodgers will eke out a win in game six and the Yanks take it down in seven.” Meanwhile in Los Angeles, fans there are predicting an earlier victory celebration. “I’ve already procured my tickets for game six,” Associate Principal Kelly Koscielny Millar said. “Go Dodgers!” There are many reasons the Dodgers will be victorious, one of which is Shohei Ohtani, one LA staff member said. “In actuality, Dodgers know it's a coin flip, and anyone could win.” The showdown begins tonight at 5:08 p.m. Pacific at Dodger Stadium. Regardless of who you’re rooting for, the competition is sure to be fierce, both on the field and in our offices. Batter up #WorldSeries2024
