We train farmers in agroforestry to build vibrant regional economies, thriving food systems, and a healthier planet.
About us
Around the world, modern and industrialized farming practices are destroying the environment—and, at the same time, failing to provide reliable income and nourishment for the farmers we all depend on to survive. At TREES, we recognize that unsustainable land use is the root cause of our most pressing challenges. We confront these challenges by serving the people at the heart of our global food systems: farmers and their families. As a global leader in agroforestry training for over 30 years, TREES provides hands-on, immersive education, skill building, and support, encouraging farmers to work with nature, not against it. Our signature methodology, the Forest Garden Approach, helps farmers transform their land with thousands of fast-growing, ecologically appropriate trees and dozens of other crops, creating new possibilities for themselves and their communities. By embracing sustainable land practices, farmers are reclaiming their agency, breaking the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuilding our food systems from the ground up.

- As Climate Week 2024 comes to a close, we’re inspired by the conversations, connections, and commitments made toward a more sustainable and resilient future. 🌍 This week reaffirmed that true climate action starts from the ground up—literally—with farmers leading the way. Through the Forest Garden Approach, farmers are restoring degraded lands, creating green jobs, and building climate-resilient communities. From transparent carbon credits to green entrepreneurship to food systems and agroforestry, the future of climate solutions is in the hands of local leaders. We look ahead to continuing our mission: partnering with farmers to scale solutions that deliver lasting impact for people and the planet. We must continue to push forward these solutions to create a sustainable and equitable future for all. Together, we can and must keep driving change—one farmer, one tree, one solution at a time. #UNGA78 #ClimateWeekNYC #FarmerLeadership #ForestGardenApproach #NatureBasedSolutions #Agroforestry #GreenJobs #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GlobalImpact
- Bring recognized as a UN World Restoration Flagship is a testament to the transformative power of farmers in restoring ecosystems and addressing climate change at scale. This award amplifies the impact of Forest Garden farmers—leaders who are regenerating degraded lands, boosting food security, and driving resilient, sustainable futures. Farmer-led solutions are at the core of climate action, and this designation highlights the essential role that smallholder farmers play in building climate-resilient communities. Thank you, UNEP, for underscoring the importance of farmer-led solutions in building sustainable futures for both people and the planet. We’re proud to stand alongside many inspiring initiatives working toward a healthier, more resilient world. It’s time for nature-based solutions that work by, for, and in communities—and it’s time for farmers to take center stage in the fight for a healthier, more sustainable world. When Africa’s fertile terrains become drylands, farmers are thrown into poverty and biodiversity shrinks. Trees for the Future is reversing this trend, assisting hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers in several African countries – from Senegal to Tanzania - to fight soil degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change. The initiative, a winner of the United Nations 2024 World Restoration Flagships, has so far restored 41,345 hectares since 2014, an area about the size of Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma, as well as supporting over 50,000 households and capturing 347 metric tonnes of CO2 per hectare through its model – the equivalent of emissions from over 100,000 litres of diesel consumed. 👏 to Trees for the Future’s efforts to protect and restore these ecosystems - Trees for the Future reposted this
✨Two days left until our very own #NYCW event ✨ We have reached capacity (over 150 signups!), but you are welcome to join our waitlist here: https://lu.ma/zayq6e7y. Our panel brings together buyers and project developers to discuss what data accuracy and transparency mean for carbon project development. Panelists include: 1️⃣ Bonnie Lei - Principal, Climate Intelligence, Rocky Mountain Institute. Bonnie leads the Carbon Markets Initiative at RMI, leveraging technology and data to improve transparency, quality, and equity of the voluntary carbon market. 2️⃣ Tim McLellan - CEO, Trees for the Future. Tim leads TREES, a regenerative agroforestry nonprofit working to restore degraded landscapes and improve income and nutrition for smallholder farmers. The panel will be moderated by Elaine Chang (CEO of TaroWorks) and Grace Lam (Co-Founder of NetaCarbon). There will be ample of networking opportunities after the panel over coffee/tea and light refreshments. 🌱 Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday! - It’s time for nature-based solutions to be led by those most connected to the land. Farmers are leading the way through agroforestry, creating green jobs and transforming their communities through sustainable land use. At TREES, we partner with farmers to develop scalable solutions that not only address climate change but also improve livelihoods. In fact, the Forest Garden Approach directly contributes to nine SDGs, including Climate Action (SDG 13) and Life on Land (SDG 15). #UNGA78 #ClimateWeekNYC #Sustainability #ClimateResilience #GreenJobs
