Great job by #TeamTSA officers at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) who intercepted two handguns at two different checkpoints on Tuesday. In one incident that morning, a man from Pittsburgh was stopped with a .32 caliber handgun loaded with six bullets and in the other, unrelated incident, a man from Baden, Pa., was stopped with a loaded .40 caliber gun. In both instances the police confiscated the weapons. "Travelers are responsible for the contents of their carry-on bags and these men face a stiff federal financial civil penalty that could cost them thousands of dollars. That’s a very expensive mistake to make. For owners of firearms in the region, I ask that you consider making your new year’s resolution that you will not bring your gun to a checkpoint and instead will pack it properly for transport on a flight," said Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Pennsylvania. We've talked a lot about “the future of travel” as we've continued moving forward with tech advancements, some that you may have noticed, as well as additional behind-the-scenes enhancements. This weekend, we’re remembering the life & legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we mark tomorrow’s 30th anniversary as a National Day of Service, we hope you have the opportunity to volunteer in your community, take time to do for others, & engage with those around you.
Here’s something we can put our paws together for... In 2024, more than 100 new explosives detection canine teams were trained and deployed to airports and mass transit facilities. These teams supported large-scale events such as the Super Bowl, Formula 1 Las Vegas and the Kentucky Derby, and enhanced security operations at airports and surface transportation systems nationwide. Who likes really, really large numbers? We do! We do! 🙌 In 2024, we screened 904M passengers. That’s a record... and up 5% from 2023. Checked bags? We screened 494 million of them! 💼 Carry-on bags? Over 2 BILLION! 🎒 *grabs calculator* If you were to add up the total distance that 2 billion carry-on bags would cover, that would get us to the moon and back... approximately three times! NEWS: TSA highlights a banner year of record passenger volumes, customer service improvements and technology enhancements. “Last year, we reached a historic milestone with the highest passenger volumes and the largest screening workforce in the agency’s history – an achievement that reflects the dedication, resilience and vigilance of our people across the agency,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “In the face of record travel volumes and evolving threats to transportation, our workforce has risen to every challenge by remaining agile with unwavering professionalism, ensuring the safety of the traveling public and security of our transportation systems. Last week, our #TechAtTSA team traveled to Las Vegas to attend #CES2025 – the world’s largest consumer electronics show. What was our team doing there? Demo'ing our latest technology and showing the public what the future of travel can look like. Have you heard about the screening at speed program? If you stopped by our booth, you had a chance to test out our shoe scanner, which aims to allow travelers to keep their shoes on at the checkpoint. Did anyone try our virtual reality x-ray viewer to unpack any bags? Through 3D image viewing, and interacting with a bag in an immersive environment, we’re able to integrate open standards into novel solutions. Weren’t there? Check out this video below!
