Women in #Sudan have been fleeing with their children from terrifying physical and sexual violence in Aj Jazirah State, seeking safety in nearby Kassala. With the war raging, the state has experienced an alarming rise in violence in the past month, displacing approximately 135,400 people to neighbouring states. Young women and girls reported being warned by their families that “if we see armed fighters come to the village and attempt to rape you, we will kill you to protect you before this happens.” Others described witnessing women throwing themselves into the river to avoid being raped by armed men. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been providing reproductive health supplies for safe births and for the clinical management of rape both in Kassala and across the country. What women and girls need most though is for the fighting to end. Conflict has shattered #Gaza’s health system, with hospitals, staff and ambulances attacked, besieged and starved of supplies, equipment and fuel. At Al Awda Hospital, a woman was killed shortly after giving birth when the ambulance she was traveling in – the hospital’s last vehicle – was targeted. In the #WestBank, Palestinians are experiencing a growing health crisis. Curfews, attacks on healthcare facilities and stepped-up restrictions on people’s movement are obstructing access to services. 🚨 The year 2023 was the hottest known on earth and 2024 is on track to be even hotter. Climate change and exposure to extreme heat increase the risk of stillbirth, miscarriage, premature births and maternal deaths.
