About us
Building the Future from the Ground Up!! US Biochar Initiative is a not-for-profit organization promoting the sustainable production and use of biochar through research, policy, technology and implementation! Biochars are fine-grained, highly porous charcoals that help soils retain nutrients and water. Biochar saves water. Biochar reduces dependency on chemical inputs. Biochar is an investment, not a cost. Biochar is decarbonizes the built environment and heavy industry. Biochar carbon can be used in construction, as filler, as pigment, as building element to reduce embodied carbon in everyday items. We can utilize above ground resources to solve many of our carbon removal and carbon management concerns. USBI hosts meetings, conferences and workshops to discover practical uses of biochar in North America. Recent projects include: market studies; education materials; networking; demonstration projects; and coordination with sectors interested in research, production, and use of biochar including agriculture, forestry and wood product, biomass energy, organics recycling, building products and ecosystem services. USBI is a partner with the International Biochar Initiative and collaborates with other biochar organizations around the world. USBI is managed by a group of volunteers representing every aspect of biochar production and use. Join USBI at our next North American Biochar Conference, September 2025, in Minneapolis, MN. USA

- Excellent video by EBI Biochar Consortium about biochar and PFAS (forever chemicals). This is the first of three videos on the topic. PFAS contamination is a critical and growing environmental challenge, affecting water quality and public health worldwide. The burgeoning biochar technology ecosystem offers a promising solution, leveraging its unique properties immobilize PFAS compounds and biochar productions processes to destroy contaminants in feedstocks. Why biochar treatment for PFAS remediation is important: 🔬 Highly Effective Adsorption: Biochar’s porous structure and surface chemistry make it highly effective at capturing PFAS molecules, reducing their mobility in water and soil systems. ♻️ Sustainable Solution: In many cases, PFAS filtration biochar is made from sewage sludge! Yes, sludge has enough embodied energy in it to fuel it's own processing to create beneficial biochar. This results in a low-impact, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic adsorbents, aligning with circular economy principles. ↗️ Scalable Technology: Biochar can be deployed at various scales, from small community water systems to large industrial remediation projects, offering flexibility for diverse needs. With a growing number of manufacturers bringing systems to market to help meet demand. 💰 Cost-Effective Option: Compared to traditional PFAS treatment methods, biochar production and application can be more affordable. We will be sure to watch for and share updates on this EBI series. What are your thoughts on how we can win this challenge?#pfas #foreverchemicals #biochar #wastemanagement #pyrolysis #biocharfiltration https://lnkd.in/dAK5UdjP

Welcome to the Biochar Learning Center! biochar-us.org - Chartalk webinar tomorrow 11/15 - "Practical Guide to Carbon Credit Certification with MNBI and CarbonPilot" This session presented by Tristan Springer is designed for both current and prospective biochar project developers seeking practical guidance on monetizing their biochar projects via the carbon market. The discussion will cover the steps involved in starting a biochar project—from selecting biomass, equipment, and sites, to creating project design documentation and life cycle assessments (LCAs). The session will also outline pathways to carbon credit certification and explain the differences between insetting and offsetting sales opportunities for commercializing biochar projects. The Minnesota Biochar Initiative's monthly CharTalk series, hosted by James Doten, brings you engaging speakers to keep up with the rapidly evolving biochar space.#carboncredits #carbonmarkets #biocharcredits #BCR https://lnkd.in/gPBxTDFi
