- POV: Waiting for the year’s first Virtual Youth Fish and Wildlife Club! Join us Wednesday, January 29, for the start of our Spring 2025 Virtual Youth Fish and Wildlife Club (YFWC)! The first session of 2025 will be about backyard birds + DIY toilet paper roll bird feeder activity! We’ll learn about how to attract birds to your space, how to keep them safe, and how to turn your bird sightings into science! 🧶 Recommended supplies: a clean toilet paper (paper towel) roll, peanut butter or some similar alternative, birdseed, string, scissors, bamboo skewer, and a butter knife! YFWC aims to tap into youth curiosity and wonder, foster appreciation for nature and culture, engage young people informally with science, and teach proficiency in outdoor skills. Programs are geared towards youth ages 8-12 but all are welcome, including the younger kiddos and curious adults. 🔗 ⬇️ How to join and this season’s schedule in the comments! Photo: USFWS

- On this It’s Out There! episode, we join Tom Stephenson, Sierra bighorn recovery coordinator with California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to survey Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep that live among the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Learn about the challenges of life in the alpine, the adaptations that let these sheep thrive and experience a day in the life of a CDFW biologist. For the full episode: https://ow.ly/H4uq50UKL1rAudio-described: https://ow.ly/pGCS50UKL1sVisual description: the opening scene shows a Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep ewe standing on a rock, then cuts to Nate walking up a scenic forest trail that then zooms in to bighorn sheep on the side a mountain. Tom then discusses the range of bighorn sheep, showing a map, and then shots of bighorn sheep (rams, one juvenile, ewes) grazing, running on a peak, and some close up shots of their faces and closes to Nate and a scene of a mountainside. - Teacher: "Students, meet your new classmates!" The new classmates: (they're eels.) American eels — in the classroom? YES! These mysterious migratory fish are taking up residency at a school in the Connecticut River watershed as part of a Service effort to inform, engage and inspire the next generation of stewards. Throughout the year, students will dive into topics like fish passage, migratory fish life cycles, and watershed ecology — all through the lens of one of the most mysterious species swimming at the bottom of the river. - When the owl gives you a sign. 🦉🛑 Owls often forage along roads and fly close to the ground, putting them at danger for vehicle strikes. If you hit an owl or find one that appears to be injured, please contact your local wildlife rehabilitator. Most state conservation agencies have a list of licensed rehabilitators available on their websites. Consider saving your local rehabber's contact information to your phone so you're prepared in the future. More tips from wildlife rehabbers: 1️⃣ Do not give any injured wild animal food or water as it can hinder the ability to correctly assess the animal's condition. 2️⃣ Do not remove an animal from its situation unless it is clearly unsafe (in the middle of the road) or you have been instructed by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. 3️⃣ Do not try to raise or rehabilitate an animal on your own. It is illegal to keep wildlife without proper permits. It is difficult to truly help animals without proper training. Wild animals may transmit diseases to you or your pets. 📷 Courtney Celley/USFWS
- Looking very cuddlable (this is deceptive, please don't try), the American pika strongly believes in personal space. They aggressively defend their home territories, especially when they're collecting food for winter storage, a period called haying. You may see or hear them trying to scare you away in high-elevation talus fields of the Western mountains. Photo: JN Stuart, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 flic.kr/p/2dhHpDB
- Edward Cope first described this fish in 1868. Translation of its original Latin name reflects appearance: small, shiny like a light, berry-red cheek. What meanings might these distinct markings communicate to the beholder? Color, contrast, shape—all have meaning, and with all this charisma, this fish clearly has something to say! And we'd respond: "we hope you persevere today and every day, you mighty, beautiful little fish, as you navigate your complex and always changing environment." New episodes of Fish of the Week! every Monday wherever you get your podcasts. S5:E4 features this fish and we hope you live with, live from, discover and enjoy #AllTheFish. - Us: Hey! What did you do over the winter break? Albatross: I laid an egg then sat on it. Laysan albatross, or mōlī in Hawaiian, lay their lone egg rather quickly after mating, but the incubation period lasts over 60 days and requires both parents putting in long shifts. Mōlī pairs began laying eggs in late November on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, on the northwestern edge of the Hawaiian Archipelago; and most chicks will hatch between mid-January and the end of February, with fledging taking off in the summer. USFWS volunteer video: Dan Rapp Video description: Mostly white seabird stands atop ground nest and gently lays an egg; close-up then shows cream-colored eggshell with some markings.
