About us
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation's record keeper. Of all documents and materials created in the course of business conducted by the United States Federal government, only 1%-3% are so important for legal or historical reasons that they are kept by us forever. Those valuable records are preserved and are available to you, whether you want to see if they contain clues about your family’s history, need to prove a veteran’s military service, or are researching an historical topic that interests you.

- Discover a moving part of history with our featured document display "Bring Them Home, Uncle Sam" on exhibit now through December 4, 2024, at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. This exhibit showcases the historic return of American service members in 1918 with the end of World War I. Many service members boarded ships in Europe arriving at ports in New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. They were welcomed home with parades and patriotic greetings. President Woodrow Wilson established Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, to honor those service members who brought an end World War I. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower renamed it Veterans Day to recognize all American veterans' service and sacrifice. https://loom.ly/2RmedU4📸: The first soldiers returning from Europe arrive aboard the RMS Mauretania.
