' 2 4 : ✨ T H E N ✨ A N D ✨ N O W In one of our final installments of '24: Then and Now, we interviewed some of the descendants of UVM students from the 1920s. Here is one story. 🌟 The year Bernice Elsie Bombardier ’27 graduated with a degree in Home Economics, Vermont flooded. By then she had already lived a remarkable life: immigrating to the U.S. from Canada at age 10, backpedaling into first grade material to push forward with her English, adapting to life on a Williamstown farm, working her way through high school as a live-in. Bernice would soon find her way through and out of her one-room schoolhouse. Somewhere along the way, a love of learning burgeoned that catapulted Bernice to the top of her class. This triumph caught one neighbor’s attention. This woman came out on her porch one day and flagged the teenage Bernice walking to school. “She said, I read in the Daily Times yesterday that you’re valedictorian," Mary Ann Mooney Chaffee '60 shares of her mother, "and you should go to college." “And she gave her an envelope with $75 in cash in it. And that’s how my mother went to UVM.” That neighbor “made such an impression on my mother," Mary Ann reflects. "And her last name was Ainsworth. And I noticed, when we've driven through Williamstown, it's the Ainsworth Public library. So obviously this woman had means and believed in education, and she wanted to do something incredible.” And that she did. As did Bernice. Once at UVM, Bernice had to work in order to earn room and board. Her first year, she worked for a professor and his wife. “But then after that,” Mary Ann recalls, “her last two years, she lived with Bertha Terrill and Sarah Holbrook.” 🌟 Watch the 📺. And for more of Mary Ann and Bernice's story, head to: https://lnkd.in/eansFkKBAnd find several more descendants stories here: https://lnkd.in/e9v8z_nP - 1 - Dr. Rose Sophie Eisman Boyarsky '44 was the first in her family to go to college. “UVM took me in when no one else would,” she tells us. 2 - As she watched her friends get whisked away by other universities, Rose felt her college dreams slip away. Most schools had a 10% quota on admitted Jewish students. But UVM came through.💚 . 3 -When her aunt and mother saw her off at Camp Abnaki as she began her UVM journey, they began to cry. . 4 - At UVM, Rose was tasked with teaching Air Cadets, during the Army's occupation. "I was 18, and the people I was teaching were in their 20s, and I didn't know whether they'd listened to me, whether they would learn anything from me." . 5 – Dr. Boyarsky met her husband, Dr. Saul Boyarsky '44 MD'46, during her Catamount days after a friend played matchmaker. While Saul completed his MD at UVM, the two planed back and forth during their engagement. Rose giggles at one memory: Frank Sinatra and his crew nursing her to health during one particularly turbulent plane ride, then helping her telephone her mother at the train station. There would be many moves – St. Louis, Durham, Nuremberg – and three children. Saul passed away in 2019 after 73 happy years walking beside Rose. . 6- Rose reflects on their UVM days together: "Weekends we would go downtown," she recalls. "There was a Chinese place, and we'd have egg foo young, which was very good, and really and truly. I studied. I had friends and we went hiking. We went up to Camel something, a number of times hiking, and one time I remember going out. We got up at the top, and there was a thunderstorm, and we ran the whole way down." . 7 – Her bachelor’s in chemistry – and passion for science -- led her to New York City for a Master’s program. “Things were very different back then,” she reflects. "Women weren't really welcome in the sciences then," she reflects. "And Columbia wasn't any different than the rest.” . 8 - “There were three women and two men [in my Master’s, after UVM]. Until the head of the department, or the head of the new graduate students, stood up and looked at us very sternly and said, and I quote, ‘You women better behave yourselves, the only reason you're here is because there's a war on and we can't find men.’ I will never forget that.” . 9 - The hard work would pay off -- and lead to a rich and colorful career as a clinical psychologist, including work with the renowned sex research pioneers Drs. Williams H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson (of televised 'Masters of Sex' fame) -- and eventually her own private practice. . 10 - At 100, Rose lives independently in a retirement community in Durham, NC. Of retired life, she cherishes time with her family most -- that and swimming. “I do a lot of swimming.”
