- A recent paper from researchers at Chinese PLA General Hospital highlights the use of on-demand, online adaptive planning in a patient with advanced head and neck cancer to account for regression in tumor volume or changes in external body contour. With large tumor volume reductions across the 33-session treatment, online adaptation plans done 5 times during the entire course allowed to maintain coverage of the target volume and reduce doses to normal tissues. The patient did well with treatment, with only grade 1 radiodermatitis and grade 2 oral mucositis. One of three winners of the "CT or CBCT Guided Online Adaptive Radiotherapy Clinical Case Reports," the paper shows a unique solution to account for the change in external body contour for online adaptation. It also highlights the benefit of online and on-demand adaptation for head and neck cancers to account for anatomical changes, as shown in the figure below. - Adaptive radiotherapy allows clinicians to personalize cancer treatment for each patient. This personalization of treatment is vital for improving patient outcomes. Learn more and #GetChecked
Personalizing care with adaptive therapy is an important step toward a world without fear of cancer. As part of Siemens Healthineers, Varian is proud to provide adaptive radiotherapy systems that integrate intelligent and image-guided technologies to precisely tailor advanced radiotherapy treatments, allowing us to move farther away from one-size-fits-all treatment delivery. This is especially important for prostate cancer, because the tumor can change shape and location each day depending surrounding anatomy. #getchecked #teamhealthineers - Our Varian Winnipeg office recently hosted the University of Manitoba Women in Computer Science group for their 2024 Mentor Mingle, and we couldn't be more excited to support such an important initiative. The gathering attracted over 50 university students who were welcomed into our office for an enriching experience. Highlights included group discussions on the importance of #ComputerScience for cancer care, engaging tours of our facilities, and a dynamic speed meet-and-greet segment with mentors from both Varian and other prominent Winnipeg tech companies. We're proud to foster education, #Mentorship, and collaboration within the tech community, and we look forward to continuing our support for initiatives that empower the next generation of #WomenInTechnology.
- Congratulations to the clinical team at Karolinska University Hospital, who recently completed the installation of their second TrueBeam radiotherapy system featuring Varian’s optional HyperSight imaging solution. Serving the Stockholm metropolitan area and surrounding regions, Karolinska University Hospital treats nearly 4,000 cancer patients each year. Now armed with two TrueBeam systems equipped with HyperSight, the clinical team will be empowered with additional capabilities in image quality, precision, and speed. The team will also benefit from the ability to re-plan on the CBCT images produced with HyperSight, bringing the benefits of offline adaptive therapy to the patients who can benefit most from this treatment modality.
- Interventional oncology (IO) is a rapidly growing field that uses minimally invasive procedures, guided by medical imaging, to target cancer and cancer-related diseases deep inside the body. IO is driven by technological innovation and focused on three main areas of cancer intervention: diagnosis, therapy, and symptom management. These interventions are done using image guidance through small incisions using advanced technologies like probes inserted through the skin or small catheters through vessels in the body to deliver treatment directly to the disease site. - When adopting new technology, radiation therapy departments weigh two primary concerns — the advancement of patient care and the potential effects on clinical workflow and efficiency. Hear from physicians at two leading U.S. cancer as they share their clinical experiences with the HyperSight imaging solution, as well as their observations about the ways it can serve to enhance patient care. https://bit.ly/4dVuhZQ
- We're excited to sign an expansion of our ten-year strategic collaboration agreement with MedServe - NSIA Advanced Medical Services Limited to further our shared goals of expanding access to cancer care in Nigeria. As the healthcare subsidiary of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, MedServe operates the largest cancer center in West Africa at its NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre in Lagos. The healthcare provider will bring online two new Varian-equipped oncology centers in 2025, with plans to build and equip additional cancer centers across Nigeria. We are proud to support this effort by providing development of human capital through education, standardization of clinical protocols, technology roadmap development, and dedicated support for MedServe centers.
- Varian’s optional HyperSight imaging solution was the focus of at least 11 presentations and posters at the 66th Annual American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) meeting earlier this year. Learn more about how HyperSight brings faster, higher-quality cone-beam CT imaging into the radiotherapy treatment room, and what investigators found in our recent Centerline article. https://bit.ly/408gDz7
