The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels. And, through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it provides funding for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country, covering 57,867 miles of state-maintained roadways. Our mission is to plan, deliver, operate and maintain a transportation system that is safe, enables easy movement of people and goods, enhances the economy and improves our quality of life. As we observe World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, let’s remember them and all those affected by road traffic tragedies. But remembrance is not enough. This video from NYS Department of Transportation shows the danger highway workers face daily while on the job. The road is their office and they want to go home safely at the end of the day. When traveling through a #WorkZone, do your part to keep yourself, other motorists & highway workers safe — slow down, move over and keep your eyes on the road. 👷♀️ 👷♂️
Our highway workers put their lives on the line every day to keep NY roads safe, and this recent work zone crash on I-81 near Whitney Point is a frightening reminder of the dangers they face. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but it could have been MUCH worse. To everyone on the road: These crashes are avoidable! Slow down, move over if possible, and stay alert in work zones—these simple actions can save lives.

VDOT is stocked and ready for winter ❄️. Crews recently conducted training exercises to test equipment and make sure that snowplow drivers are familiar with their routes. We've come a long way! On this day (Nov. 1) in 1957 the original HRBT opened. Today, both the westbound and eastbound (1976) tunnels carry 100,000 vehicles a day during peak travel. The first immersed tube forged new opportunities and opened commerce between the Peninsula and Southside. Today the region watches as two new bored tubes are being built along side the existing tunnels to increase travel time reliability and ease congestion over the harbor. #VDOT #VDOTHR #HRCP #Flatiron #Vinci #Dragados #Engineering #Tunneling #Construction #MaryTheTBM
