- Members of our finance and pharmacy team at Waikiki Health (WH) attended the recent Ryan White (RW) Conference in Atlanta, along with other grantees and community stakeholders. In July, the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded the continuation of a three-year grant contract in support of our Ryan White Part C Early Intervention Services (EIS) Program. The RW funding supports direct care and treatment services for people living with HIV/AIDS. Primary care and preventative services include laboratory services, ongoing treatment, and follow up for HIV/AIDS and its co-morbidities. Patients may also receive oral health care, behavioral health care, nutritional consultation, pharmacy services, and referrals. Waikiki Health’s EIS Program is committed to the early detection and treatment of HIV, which can help prevent the onset of AIDS and other opportunistic infections. WH is at the forefront of HIV medicine and prevention, providing comprehensive care since 1992; and is the preeminent provider of prevention and holistic services for those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Hawaii. - Waikiki Health (WH) had the privilege of visiting with several other Community Health Centers (CHC) from the PACIFIC ISLANDS PRIMARY CARE ASSOCIATION (PIPCA) at a recent event hosted by NACHC CEO, Dr. Rhee. CHCs from the US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPIs) were also at the reception, visiting Oahu for their annual meeting. According to National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) representatives, guests included “CHCs spanning across 5 time zones and 107 inhabited islands covering an expanse of ocean larger than the continental US; 9 CHCs operating 38 sites, serve 1 in 5 of the nearly 500K people in 6 USAPIs: 3 territories of American Samoa, CNMI, and Guam; 3 Freely Associated States (FAS) of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.” Dr. Rhee said he was “on a journey to better understand Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders and island health disparities, opportunities and challenges.” Dr. Rhee additionally spent time visiting with 7 out of the 14 Hawaii CHCs, including WH, while here for the Hawaii Primary Care Association (HPCA) annual conference. Reflecting with gratitude last week when my family and I had the opportunity to visit Waikiki Health with the wonderful and thoughtful CEO Alexis Charpentier, MPH. Since being founded in 1967 as the 1st Community Health Center (CHC) in the great state of Hawaii and originally named the "Waikiki Drug Clinic", they have been providing compassionate healing and expert care for ALL in their island community. With the mission "to provide quality medical and social services that are accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of ability to pay," they provided 63,768 patient visits in 2023 through an integrated primary care care model of medical, dental, mental health, substance abuse, vision, and enabling services (e.g., care coordination, health education, shelter visits). Their commitment and impact of serving as the "Employer, Provider, and Partner of Choice" in their community for nearly six decades was evident in our conversation and the extraordinary work that their committed and caring workforce are delivering every day. I am thankful for the opportunity to listen, learn, share, and spend time with their amazing leadership team in their administrative offices during their monthly leadership team meeting. On another day, my family (who took the photos below) and I met and spoke with the dedicated staff at 3 of their busy, beautiful sites, including their Keauhou (Keauhou means "new beginning") Shelter site that provides emergency housing using the Housing First model. This model enrolls the unhoused straight from the street and then assists them with their broader determinants of health including primary care. Keauhou holds 75-85 people in a dormitory-type arrangement with shared bathrooms and showers, shared kitchen, and laundry spaces. We learned and discussed how this work is so important as the broader context and need on the island of Oahu is estimated to be around 3-5K people who are unhoused (https://lnkd.in/eEAry6Qf.). CHCs like Waikiki Health serve over 1.4M people who are unhoused across the nation. Please learn more and support them at: https://waikikihc.org/.National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) believes that CHCs like Waikiki Health are the best, most innovative, most resilient, and most diverse part of our health system. We stand united with CHCs for and with the people we have served and will serve as “the best is yet to come.” Please learn more and support the CHC movement at: https://www.nachc.org.#HealthCenters #ValueCHCs #FundCHCs #WeAreNACHC- +15

- Mahalo to Dr. Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, for taking time during his recent trip to Hawaii to stop in for a visit and tour of Waikiki Health. Dr. Rhee, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Community Health Centers (pictured in center) met with our leadership team to discuss challenges and opportunities facing Community Health Centers (CHCs) like Waikiki Health. FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers) including Waikiki Health, along with 1,400 other CHCs across the country, provide quality, comprehensive healthcare services to more than 31.5 million patients annually. Staffing remains one of the biggest challenges CHCs face nationwide. - On May 22, 2024, Alexis Charpentier, Waikiki Health’s Chief Executive Officer, graduated from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a master’s in public health degree. She graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA and was inducted into the prestigious Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, Alpha Chapter through a highly selective process that assesses a person’s outstanding performance and devotion to the field of Public Health. Honorees must demonstrate qualities of outstanding leadership in public health and a potential for making significant contributions to the field of public health. At her commencement, students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health recited a declaration of Health Rights, which states: “Access to affordable health care is a human right. Health services should be effective, safe, equitable, and responsive to individual needs. Achieving health equity is everyone’s responsibility and requires a commitment to advancing the physical, environmental, economic, social, and political conditions necessary to support all people in the work attaining their full health potential”. This statement perfectly reflects both Alexis and Waikiki Health. Congratulations!
