Why EVgo had to ACT to catch Tesla’s Supercharging DOMINANCE Now other networks can catch up too “The bottom line is that charging companies need to provide a great customer experience, and it starts with chargers that work.”Hilary Taylor, CEO, WattsUpIf you’ve spent time in both a Tesla and an EV from another brand, you’ll know that the Tesla Supercharger experience is excellent. The chargers always connect, payment is seamless and they’re (almost) always working. If one isn’t, the next one is. Other networks are far less pretty. Last summer we took a day trip from Toronto to Prince Edward County in the excellent Genesis GV60. Over the 500 km (300 mile) return trip, we had to stop FIVE TIMES due to charging problems, making it an extremely slow and stressful trip. This is completely unacceptable. EVGo realised there were significant problems on their network, born out by J.D. Power showing they were a massive 165 points behind the Tesla experience. There were 2 main problems: 1) Vehicle connectivity (Until this year, Superchargers were a closed system) 2) Charger reliability The former is now being addressed through the OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) 15118-2 standard and NACS roll out. The later, Charger Reliability, is more complex. After replacing old chargers, the next step was to introduce new maintenance software to bolster reliability software, based on a “Canary Model.” Ie “a performance monitoring tool designed to automatically identify and analyze patterns and diagnose issues in real time." To do this, software monitors the chargers and collects data to establish patterns that point towards potential upcoming failures. This was a (very laudable) INTERNAL effort by EVGo. Which begs the question: What about other networks? How can they improve charger reliability? Right now, Vision Mobility is working with 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝘁𝘀𝗨𝗽 who are developing AI powered charger maintenance software to greatly improve reliability and up time. WattsUp’s approach is to use machine learning to detect anomalies and look for failure patterns to prevent cascading failure points. When a sign of a potential upcoming failure is detected, an alert is sent to both technicians and charging operator network dashboard, giving transparency and visibility. The system then coordinates parts and labor by technician trip to ensure the maintenance is completed BEFORE the failure occurs. This significantly reduces charger maintenance costs, and increases revenue by keeping charger up time high. Even better, WattsUp’s software is brand agnostic and will be available for ALL charging networks, which is a huge win for operators and technicians. However, the real winners are EV drivers, as finally they can rely on out of home charging; and that’s HUGE! Do you agree that out of home charging needs to significantly improve in reliability? OBD2 provided a universal standard that allowed technicians to quickly diagnose and fix issues across different car models and manufacturers, leading to reduced repair times, improved vehicle performance, and enhanced customer satisfaction. In the same vein, these standardized error codes will allow for quicker diagnostics, more effective repairs, and a more reliable EV charging network, paving the way for greater adoption of electric vehicles. At WattsUp, we are integrating these standardized error codes into our machine learning driven diagnostics system.
