- *NEW* This week, the Trump administration invoked mass rescissions of executive orders - and signed dozens of dangerous new orders - attacking historic progress made on issues impacting people across the country such as environmental and health protections, climate progress, racial and gender equity, LGBTQIA+ as well as immigrant rights. READ & SHARE OUR STATEMENT: https://lnkd.in/eZ3tVHWf“As we enter into an era of weaponized phrases and issues, we must remember that environmental justice means that all people should have equitable access to a healthy, sustainable, and resilient environment. Trump’s day one acts - including rescissions of nearly 80 vital executive orders while adding dozens of new, anti-democratic orders - roll-back popular policies that promote clean, renewable, and affordable energy. These actions also place vulnerable communities in even greater danger from pollution and the dire, real-time consequences of the climate crisis. In the face of these assaults, we will not stop pursuing justice. We will continue to push for comprehensive laws to codify necessary policies people across the country need and want. We will lead and collaborate on the local level in New York and beyond to advance these efforts. We will not let these attacks remove the rights our communities have to a safe and healthy life and future." - Leslie G. Fields, Chief Federal Officer, WE ACT for Environmental Justice

- *NEW* WE ACT for Environmental Justice Concerned for American Health & Well-being with Nomination of Zeldin as Head of US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) >> The confirmation hearing of former Rep. Lee Zeldin nominated as next Administrator of the U.S. EPA showcased the risk his appointment poses for millions across the country, especially those living in environmental justice communities. READ AND SHARE THE FULL STATEMENT>> https://lnkd.in/eVvj-9-M Leslie G. Fields, Chief Federal Officer at WE ACT for Environmental Justice shared, “The confirmation of former Rep. Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency could result in dire consequences for millions of Americans. The work of the EPA is to ensure our fundamental rights are maintained, including access to clean air, water, and land. These protections have been one of the only ways to reduce the pollution burdens facing environmental justice communities enduring disproportionate illness and premature death. Should Zeldin be appointed to the highest level at the EPA, it sends a message by the Trump Administration that polluting industries be prioritized over the well-being of Americans, and particularly those most burdened – including Black, Brown, and low-income communities. If confirmed, Lee Zeldin must uphold environmental, civil rights, and public health laws as part of his responsibility as Administrator of the EPA. It is our hope that he fully complies, implements, and enforces bedrock rights to clean air, water, and healthy environments. In all circumstances, we will continue to protect the progress and vital functions of the EPA for the environmental health of our communities now and always.”#EnvironmentalJustice #EPA #EnvironmentalProtection #Environment #EnvironmentalAction #Climate #ClimateJustice #EnvironmentalRights #CleanAir #CleanWater #LeeZeldin
- Come Rally for Better Parks! As part of New Yorkers for Parks, we encourage you to come to their rally on the steps of City Hall at 10:30 AM on Thursday, Jan. 23 to kick off our 2025 advocacy for better parks in Northern Manhattan and throughout the city. We are asking for increased funding, staffing, and maintenance for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Come with your signs and energy, and let’s make our voices heard! RSVP:https://lnkd.in/erRuEFac
- RSVP HERE: https://lnkd.in/ecVMtNnmThe New York State legislative session has begun, and we have an opportunity for you to join fellow advocates in lobbying for the NY HEAT Act. This state legislation, which passed the Senate last year and had a lot of support in the Assembly, will significantly reduce your energy bill while fighting climate change. Formerly known as the Home Energy Affordable Transition Act, the NY HEAT Act will end the 100-foot rule, which forces New Yorkers to pay $200 million every year to subsidize unnecessary new gas hookups, and amend the obligation to serve, allowing utilities to provide cheaper and cleaner energy alternatives at no additional cost to customers. The legislation will also cap home energy bills at 6 percent of household income, which should help the 1.4 million New Yorkers who struggle to pay their energy bills. As part of the Renewable Heat Now coalition, we will be heading up to Albany on Tuesday, February 4 to talk to legislators about the importance of passing the NY HEAT Act this session. They will have a free bus leaving Manhattan at 7:30 AM and heading back around 4:00-4:30 PM that afternoon. We will provide a free lunch and lobby training once we arrive. After that, we will have a rally at the State Capitol Building (indoors) at 12:30 PM followed by scheduled meetings with legislators from 1:30-4:00 PM.
- We wrapped up our fall course last month, led by our Environmental Health Department at the The City University of New York School of Public Health! 🎓 As part of our Environmental Health & Justice Leadership Training program, community participants and students delved into critical environmental justice topics, including climate justice, public health, and advocacy. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the program’s success!
