We are proud and honored to be a place where the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer communities, as well to those living with or affected by HIV feel supported, welcomed and respected. These are very trying days for those in the #Transgender community... especially youth. The Executive Director of Whitman-Walker Institute, Kellan E. Baker, had some great thoughts to share with SALON Mag. Transgender people are at a higher risk of dying by suicide than the general population due to the discrimination they face in schools, health care settings, and beyond. Gender-affirming care has been shown to reduce dysphoria, suicidality and depression for transgender and gender-diverse communities. “These kids are being targeted and bullied by some of the most powerful people in their state and now at the national level,” said Kellan Baker, the executive director of the Whitman-Walker Institute, an LGBTQ health center based in Washington D.C. “So what we expect is even greater increases in the number of kids feeling hopeless when all they're trying to do is live their lives.”#weseeyou #whitmanwalker #whitmanwalkerinstituteRead the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ei_scB4m

The Foundation, which has it owns board of directors and 501 (c)(3) designation, uses community-based philanthropy to ensure sustainability and support growth for all Whitman-Walker companies. “Ted comes to the Whitman-Walker Foundation with a track record of building relationships and executing strategies that increase organizations’ effectiveness and visibility,” said Dr. Heather Aaron EdD, MPH, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health System. “His experience also includes serving as volunteer at Whitman-Walker, a testament to his commitment to our mission and the patients we are honored to serve.” In 2021, while at the Cancer Support Community, Miller worked with Whitman-Walker to facilitate First Lady Jill Biden’s visit to the center to encourage Americans to get cancer screenings. In addition to receiving the Washington Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business Lifetime Achievement Award, Cary was also recognized this week by the Mid-Atlantic MarCom Summit and ADWKDC for her role as founder of ADWKDC on its 20th Anniversary. In addition to being one of DMV's most celebrated advertising executives, Cary has worked tirelessly for years as a dedicated Board Member of the Whitman-Walker Foundation, raising funds to ensure that Whitman-Walker continues to be a place where the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer communities – as well as those living with or affected by HIV – feel supported, welcomed and respected. Whitman-Walker is thrilled to announce that Naseema Shafi, the CEO of Whitman-Walker Health, has been named to Washington Business Journal's 2024 List of Women Who Mean Business. Now in its 21st year, this annual celebration of the region's top female executives is one of WBJ's most prestigious awards and receives hundreds of nominations. In her 17-year tenure, and as CEO since 2019, Naseema embodies our mission to be a place where we see the person first, and a healthcare home where patients are treated with dignity, respect and love. GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality and Whitman-Walker Institute Highlight New Study on the Adoption Rates of Expanded Gender Markers in the National Provider Identifier (NPI) System. A recent study explores the adoption of new gender markers by health professionals, following the expansion of the NPI system to include additional options for gender identity, including options for non-binary health professionals, alongside the "male" and "female” options. The inclusion of "unspecified or another gender identity (X) and undisclosed (U)" gender markers were the result of an advocacy initiative led by GLMA in collaboration with Whitman-Walker Institute. Effective beginning in April 2024, this change aimed to promote inclusivity and equity within healthcare systems. It allows health professionals to accurately represent their gender identity, aligning with legal documents and enhancing the accuracy of research and directories. The study is authored by Jae Corman, PhD, Head of Analytics & Research at FOLX Health and Julia "Yulia" Przedworski, PhD, at Diversity Science, and applauded by Jona Tanguay, MMSc, PA-C, AAHIVS, GLMA President and Medical Lead at Whitman-Walker; Kellan E.
