About us

The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining. The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

🌍 O dia de hoje iniciou com a sessão "Leveraging Key Resources to Secure an Effective Energy Transition", no pavilhão do United Nations Global Compact, que foi coorganizada pela United Nations Global Compact Network Portugal, UN Global Compact Network Netherlands e UN Global Compact Türkiye, contou as boas-vindas de Diogo Almeida e a intervenção de Jennifer Layke, Global Director no World Resources Institute. Participaram no painel: - João Teixeira, Head of Sustainability na Natura- Filipa Laborinho, Councillor no Município de Oeiras- Patrícia Pereira da Silva, Pro-rector na Universidade de Coimbra👨🎓 A sessão contou ainda com os testemunhos de dois alunos da Escola Secundária de Miraflores, Tomás Pereira e Matias Fareleira, que foram os vencedores da primeira simulação de uma COP em Portugal. Today marks Human Development Day at #COP29. A just transition to a green economy will not be achieved without putting people at the center and ensuring they have the skills and jobs to participate in the green economy. This was the headline message from an engaging roundtable co-chaired by the COP29 High Level Climate Champion Nigar Arpadarai and sponsored by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Systemiq Ltd., World Resources Institute, the NDC Partnership and edc.org in Baku. The roundtable included high level representatives from governments, U.N. agencies, the private sector, development finance and cooperation agencies, philanthropies and employers' organizations. Key messages included: ✅ Failing to invest in people will be disruptive and costly for the environment and our economies. ✅ Investing in green jobs and skills is not a goodwill effort, it is a precondition to deliver our climate goals and must be at the heart of climate and economic strategies. The NDC updates are a crucial process to seize this opportunity. ✅ Equipped with the right skills people will be able to navigate transition impacts while simultaneously empowering them to drive the new climate-friendly economy. ✅ Investing in people for a just transition requires integrated action on job creation, skills development and social protection. Participants strongly supported the need for an initiative to advance Skills and Jobs for the Green and Just Economy to help frame a global agenda, mobilize action in countries and engage with businesses. The initiative will drive action on the COP29 Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience. A flagship report to further strengthen the case for action will be launched at COP30 and the initiative will support champion countries to work on the climate-skills-jobs-nexus in the forthcoming months. We thank all participants for their outstanding contribution and energy during the session, and for their commitment to jointly advancing this critical agenda.

It was an honor to celebrate the first Human Development Day at COP29—a recognition that people must be at the heart of climate action. Growing up in Delhi, I witnessed the harsh realities of pollution firsthand, and we are seeing increasing climate impacts all around the world. Clean energy solutions, like electric buses, cars and public transportation, are not just about reducing emissions—they are about giving children clean air to breathe and healthier futures. Climate action also drives prosperity. Millions of jobs will emerge from the green transition. But who benefits? If prosperity isn’t shared equitably, the transition—and our collective ambition—will falter. The hard truth is, we are not yet ready. Many assume this is an issue for emerging economies, but developed countries also face challenges like the lack of skilled workers for green projects. Shockingly, only 10% of countries climate commitments have strategies for developing green skills. If we want more ambitious climate action, people must see real benefits. Human development is not just a goal—it’s the foundation for a sustainable, inclusive future for people, nature and climate.

UNICEF invited me to speak at a session on the very essence of this COP - how do we bring the funding together to safeguard the future of our children… Yet few sessions except this one actually underline what investment are critical to make sure children’s daily lives are protected and give a voice to children. This one did- and we actually should be hearing much more often from them directly. When you take just one moment to reflect on it- we all know that children’s bodies are more vulnerable than adults and on top of that, they are still building the very foundations of their lives. All that is at risk for so many children around the world. And we need to look beyond the evident need to ensure availability of food and safe water. Children need hospitals with reliable electricity, they need schools where they can concentrate (my kids certainly can’t in a classroom where it’s 35 degrees) and they need clean air so they don’t develop respiratory diseases. Yet only 2.4 % of investments are made in line with what children need- UNICEF has calculated. We should be doing so much better and cities can play a large role. Research shows that in 2050 about 70 of the children will live in cities - and most of them in slums… World Resources Institute is working with cities around the world. As we are looking ahead to the COP in Belem, where countries will be indicating their new ambitions - let’s all aim for cities to get a much more prominent place in the new “Nationally Determined Contributions” (NDC’s). 75 countries have promised to do so under the #CHAMP declaration. Let’s make sure they deliver- so cities can deliver… for our children.. Thank you so much UNICEF Kitty van der Heijden for bringing us together around the essence of COP: future generations.
