Working to end all forms of youth incarceration!
About us
The Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP) is building a youth-led movement to end the practice of trying and incarcerating young people as adults and create a world without youth incarceration. Through our work in the Philadelphia jails, YASP provides space for incarcerated young people to express themselves creatively and to develop as leaders both within and beyond the prison walls. Young people who have been through the adult court system are at the forefront of YASP, leading the movement to keep young people out of adult prisons and to create new possibilities for youth around the city.

We came. We pitched. We won. Through a pitch competition, YEAH Philly brought teens from across the city together to create social media content related to how guns impact our lives in Philadelphia. The summer programming gave 30 young people a chance to step outside their comfort zone and do something differently while learning about the realities of violence we deal with on a daily basis. "We see now more than ever that the system is hard on people but it's soft on crime," Songster said. "The way it promotes more crime and more harm is antithetical to accountability. It lets people off the hook by occasionally throwing them away and never encouraging them or supporting them to face those inner demons or those fallibilities that led to them doing certain things."#FlashbackFriday to this Business Insider article featuring our friends at Healing Futures with the Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project and our current Restorative Justice and Transformative Healing Manager, Kempis 'Ghani' Songster. For 27 years the state prevented me from experiencing a love like this. Today on the 2-year anniversary of my escape, I’m soaking it all in. Meet Jubilee, a week old, my joy, my freedom, my act of defiance. - Congrats to our Healing Futures Program Manager Felix B. Rosado!!!

Seventeen years ago Let’s Circle Up began as just an idea inside Graterford Prison’s 30-foot-high concrete wall by two men condemned to die there, Charles Boyd and me. We wanted to introduce as many people as possible to restorative justice. The intro to RJ workshop we initially conjured up and then refined over the years is now available in this book. Thank you Living Justice Press for believing in this project long before I narrowly escaped my death sentence almost two years ago. Until Charles does the same, a piece of him will transcend those cages via the pages within this book. Please join us for our next webinar, "Restorative Justice in the North," next Wednesday, June 26 from 3-4:30 pm ET. Part of the Restorative Justice: A Regional Lens webinar series, this session will feature community-based organizations and practitioners committed to implementing restorative approaches that promote accountability and healing within communities and function alongside or outside the criminal legal system. Presenters will share recommendations for implementing restorative justice based on their experience. To register, learn more about upcoming webinars, and watch recordings of past offerings, please visit ncorj.org/webinars. - Our Healing Futures team had an awesome day training in restorative justice with our comrades at Asian Americans United. ‘Til the whole world is circled up!
