There is no Just Transition without #YouthJusticeAnd when youth is not an homogenous group… how might young people be better represented in the #JustTransition? This was a question we asked at the recent TED Countdown event in Brussels where we ran a workshop with Joshua Amponsem of Youth Climate Justice Fund and are asking more on Youth Day today at COP29. Just Transition planning typically involves “consulting” with “affected communities” but young people are rarely considered, despite arguably being the MOST affected community. In our workshop, we explored how the different lived experiences of the Just Transition for the young people has implications for their different needs. We put ourselves in the shoes of three personas: 👨🏭 Jean, a 28-year-old artisanal critical minerals miner from the DRC, fears that he, his colleagues, and youth in vulnerable sectors will lose their livelihoods in the Just Transition. 👩🎓 Emily, an 18-year-old high school graduate from Berlin, has yet to find a place at higher education or start a career; she feels uncertain and anxious about her future in a rapidly changing world. 🧑🌾 Miguel, a 24-year-old small-scale farmer near São Paulo, strives for sustainability amid industrial agriculture pressures. He aspires to innovate by prioritising health over profits but lacks the support or resources he needs. Check out our joint article, where we share five strategies for engaging young people in the Just Transition:https://lnkd.in/e8atGbgq #JustTransition #GenZ #YouthDay #COP29 #ClimateJustice Efua Nyamekye Appiah Kite Insights Joseph Gelfer Matt Taylor Ela Stopford Sackville Lindsay Levin Lindsay Clinton Jessica M. ✨Global South Voices at COP29: Financing Climate Solutions from the Ground Up Panel This morning in Baku, alongside Casa Fund (Fundo Casa Socioambiental) and Comuá Network (Rede Comuá), we hosted our panel "Financing Solutions from the Ground Up: Local, Territorial, and Activist Funds in the Global South," with discussions navigating between inspiration and practical solutions, highlighting the transformative potential of local funds from the Global South in building community-rooted solutions. The first part of the panel provided a rich overview of the history and challenges shaping the work of Alianza's member funds. Maria Amalia Souza, founder of Casa Fund, highlighted the fund's pioneering role in creating the ecosystem and the rise of Alianza while offering a global perspective on trends and challenges. Jaime Guillen, from Fondo Tierra Viva, a member fund of Alianza working in Central America, shed light on the difficulties faced in a highly vulnerable and often overlooked region. Joshua Amponsem, from the Youth Climate Justice Fund, shared a striking fact: the Global South diaspora sends $590 billion annually in remittances. This underscores the role of this genuine philanthropy as one of the largest financial flows.Farah Sofa, Program Officer at the Ford Foundation, shared insights from the foundation's work in Indonesia, emphasizing the challenges of connecting diverse actors, such as governments and civil society and highlighting Ford's role as a facilitator of these dialogues. The second part of the panel focused on practical approaches. Jaime shared an inspiring example of community mobilization among the Miskito divers from Honduras to address public health issues. Joshua spoke about how the Youth Climate Justice Fund builds partnerships rooted in its realities, rejecting donor-imposed rules and fostering collaborations aligned with its goals. Balkissou Buba, from the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, introduced the Shandia Platform, a tool for promoting and facilitating funding to communities. As a final highlight, Maria Amália launched the Casa Fund policy brief "Community Philanthropy and Locally-Led Adaptation Solutions: Lessons Learned from the Global South." The document outlines challenges and opportunities related to financing mechanisms and demonstrates how local funds already integrate global adaptation principles into their practical actions, strengthening participatory and community-led processes. 👏We want to thank all the panelists who shared their valuable perspectives and experiences and everyone who joined us in person. 💡Stay tuned as we share more outcomes and reflections from Alianza's events at COP29. - Youth Climate Justice Fund reposted this

I just finished a press conference with Ana Toni - Secretary for Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, María Mendiluce - CEO of We Mean Business Coalition, and Avinash Persaud - Special Advisor on Climate Change to the President of the Inter-American Development Bank. And our message was simple: As we enter a critical second week of negotiations at the UN Climate Change conference (CO29), we know that governments have to agree on an ambitious new finance goal in order to meet their commitments already set out in the Paris Agreement and the Global Stocktake. G20 Heads of State, we - networks connecting more than 38,000 businesses around the world and other society leaders - are ready to build the global economy. To do this, we have two asks: → Move the money: Agree a high-ambition finance goal at COP29 which catalyzes the finance required to meet the needs of developing economies. → Publish the plans: Submit national climate plans by February that are 1.5°C-aligned, sector-specific and backed by investment positive policies that can turbocharge sustainable growth. It’s not game over, it’s game on.#Mission2025 Youth Climate Justice Fund Nathan Nakabuye Dora Cudjoe Nigel Topping, CMG Leslie Johnston, M.Sc. 🌍 Spotlight on Youth Climate Leadership 🌍 Meet Nathan Méténier, a dynamic climate advocate. As co-Director of the Youth Climate Justice Fund, Nathan empowers youth-led movements to drive environmental change. His work to bridge the reported impacts of climate change and the reality for youth is essential to making progress on the climate crisis. At the Skoll Foundation, we celebrate leaders like Nathan who are guiding the way for a sustainable future. ▶️ 🔗 Watch his interview on this week's Spotlight: https://skoll.wf/4fD0gzP/ #ClimateAction #YouthLeadership #COP29 - 🌱 An important moment for youth in climate action! We are thrilled to share that ClimateWorks Foundation is making a $2 million investment to support youth-led initiatives tackling climate change. This initiative unites nine partners, including Black Girl Environmentalist, UMI Fund, Latin America Youth Climate Scholarships, Youth Climate Justice Fund and more, to ensure young leaders are heard and supported. Did you know that youth initiatives currently receive less than 1% of climate mitigation funding? That’s why investing in next generation leaders is crucial! We’re not just nurturing their potential; we’re also creating a brighter, more equitable future for all. Together, we are paving the way for meaningful advancements! 🌍🌳 🌸 Discover more here: https://lnkd.in/gr28GMkX
