There are only 3 ‘categories’ of work you can pursue to improve the world: Grower: You can ‘grow’ the economic pie, meaning there is ‘more of everything’ to go around. Distributor: You can change the way the pie is distributed, focusing on ‘different’ resource distribution (e.g., Nonprofits, Social Work). Enforcer: You can enforce the rules of the game that allow these systems to work (Military, Law). Human beings have been fighting intensely for centuries (thanks United States Military Academy at West Point History classes) about resource distribution and enforcement. As an Army Ranger, I served as an ‘enforcer’ of U.S. foreign policy under two administrations. It was intense, and I was great at it. But somewhere inside, it felt like a zero-sum game. I left behind a role where I was an expert practitioner to find my calling. For years, I thought I had made a mistake. Maybe, like my Father, a Military Officer, I was destined to be an enforcer. Or, like my Mother, a Social Worker, I was destined to be a resource distributor. These are some of the most impact-driven roles. Yet, for me, it never fit. When I finally internalized category 1 (impact through economic expansion, e.g., growing the pie), my life changed. When you’ve fought, literally, to enforce scarce resource distribution (in my case, land taken back block by block), the idea of pushing towards a world where there is ‘enough’ for everyone is intoxicating. Economic expansion has two levers: 1) Productivity 2) Access to Credit. The second expands and contracts over time. The first, productivity, has been, and will always be, a direct function of human innovation: the horse plow, the steam engine, the personal computer, software. Productivity is our biggest lever to get us towards a ‘world of enough.’ Within productivity, our highest leverage point is software. Productivity is defined as Output/Input. Software enables a one-time, highly expensive input for an infinite, near-zero marginal cost output. This is magical. However magical, the input cost remains aggressively high in both cost and time. So, what kind of economic productivity gains could we drive if we brought the cost to create software down by 100x? I’m not talking about the 30-40% gains seen by co-pilots, but orders of magnitude amplification. We are taking the highest productivity lever and leveraging it up by multiple orders of magnitude.
