In early 2013, Kirwan began having conversations with Community Development for All People (CD4AP, a CDC on the South side) about the flurry of redevelopment activity on the South side. In early 2013, Kirwan began having conversations with Community Development for All People (CD4AP, a CDC on the South side) about the flurry of redevelopment activity on the South side. We asked some key questions: How can we ensure that everyone in the community benefits from these renewed investments? How can we do redevelopment in a way that bridges people from different walks of life together? And how can our organizations help in that effort? Too often in neighborhood redevelopment initiatives, the investment and development—the brick and mortar pieces—tend to overwhelm the process, to the neglect of reinvigorating community engagement and developing social capital. Too often, existing residents are displaced from enjoying the benefits of these investments. We wanted to make sure that social reinvestments were regarded as importantly as physical reinvestments.
In 2014, CD4AP and Kirwan received a 2-year grant from the Office of Outreach and Engagement at The Ohio State University to look deeper at those questions through a series of activities centered on inclusive community planning and engagement. These activities include asset mapping, developing and leveraging existing "third places" (i.e. the home away from home, places where residents from all over a community gather, sense of belonging is felt), and developing programming around food, children, and housing-- programming that reflects the creation of and support for existing third places, the value of diversity, and the vision of creating an opportunity-rich South side.
