- Sandy Kenslow Announcing Short Term Disability Insurance for Kids! (Just kidding…) I was recently reminded of a parenting win that my insurance friends will particularly appreciate. Last year, my youngest son injured his knee at football practice. So ensued the round of x-rays, crutches, an MRI, physical therapy, and various sports medicine consultations. (But thankfully no surgery.) Friday of the first week arrived and an irate 17-year-old came to me with the news: “Dad stiffed me for half my allowance!” Well, you didn’t do any chores this week. No work, no pay. “Mom, I’m on crutches!” (Lightbulb moment. When you work in insurance and your kids have no idea what you do, these lightbulb moments are especially satisfying.) Okay, so what you’re saying is you can’t perform the regular duties of your occupation? “What are you talking about???” Well, just consider this short-term disability pay. Your employer (We the Parents, Inc.) has generously supplied you with a salary replacement plan in the event you are sick or injured and can’t work. It pays 50% of regular rate of pay, weekly, until you are cleared by your doctor to resume normal activity. There isn’t even any waiting period. Some employers provide this to you at no cost and some provide it where you can sign up for it at your own cost. I’m so glad you won’t be completely without pay these next several weeks. When you’re out in the real world, adulting and all that, make sure you ask about short term disability insurance as part of your benefits package. The eyeroll was impressive. After a couple of weeks though, guess who quit complaining and eventually figured out how to empty the dishwasher while on crutches? In all seriousness, this is a part of employee benefits I truly enjoy. Educating and teaching people about benefits. What are they? How do they help me? How do they work? When would I use them? If you can’t see yourself using a benefit, how can you understand the value it brings? Insurance can be so abstract and it’s important to understand benefits in real terms and in real scenarios. My son might not have appreciated learning about it at that moment, but when he gets his first job after college, I’ll bet he has a better understanding of employee benefits than most new grads. Parenting win! #ChooseMylo #SmallGroupBenefits
