- Willibrord George How I beat: “I don’t know where to start with AI in my school” I call it the 'Strategic AI Integration' method for K-12 schools. Each step focuses on: Understanding → builds a strong foundation Planning → provides a clear direction Action → drives measurable results Here’s a practical AI roadmap framework for schools: Start with understanding AI capabilities ↳ (What AI can do for your school) Break down AI capabilities into simple terms for educators. Relate each capability to common educational needs, such as personalized learning, efficient administration, or enhanced student engagement. Identify specific opportunities in your school ↳ (Where AI fits in your context) Identify areas where AI can save time or enhance learning, like automating administrative tasks or providing personalized tutoring. Consider repetitive tasks that could benefit from automation, freeing up teachers to focus on teaching. Align AI with educational objectives ↳ (Make sure it supports your school’s goals) Focus on educational outcomes that matter most, such as improving student performance, reducing dropout rates, or increasing engagement. Prioritize AI projects that have the highest potential impact on students and staff. Design a pilot project ↳ (Test small before going big) Choose a manageable, high-impact use case, like an AI tool for grading or personalized learning software. Set clear metrics for success, such as improved grades or reduced administrative hours, and monitor them closely. De-risk implementation ↳ (Minimize potential pitfalls) Start with AI tools that augment teachers’ abilities, not replace them. Implement ethical guidelines to ensure data privacy and fairness, especially considering student data. Prepare your staff with comprehensive training and maintain clear communication throughout the process. → Methodical enough to see positive changes. → Flexible enough to adapt as you learn more. Try applying this strategy over the next few months and watch how AI can transform learning and administration in your school! Feel free to reach out if you need more guidance or have questions! 😊
- Jeff Mummert About ten years ago, when many graduate offerings for teachers were concentrating on specific devices and software applications, I decided to create a course that was designed for the long term: What are ways that educators can adapt to the onset of new technologies? Which responses to new educational technologies are and are not evidence- or research-based? How do the objectives of educational technology companies often conflict with the purposes of K12 education? How are we as educators supposed to gauge the effectiveness, relevance, and trustworthiness of new tech? Through the years, participants have been guided by the course in creating their own rubrics, "pitching" a new technology from a business standpoint, and then applying their own rubrics to the pitches of other participants. In the process, virtually every major education technology-appropriate piece of hardware and software application has been pitched and reviewed by course participants. Among the most recent technologies in the course were MakeMusic Cloud, Blooket, SAM Studio, and MergeCube, and several standbys- Canvas, Google Workspace, and the iPad. Join me! - Eric Valcheff What a pleasure to work with such smart and committed group as the TAC. Project Unicorn’s Technical Advisory Committee is releasing a series of resources over the next few weeks starting with this strategic foundaton for modernization. As a Project Unicorn TAC Member/Steering Committee Member, I’m excited to share @project-unicorn-innovateedu ‘s Technical Advisory Committee resource series! First up: “Data Modernization in K-12 Education: A Journey Towards Improved Learning Outcomes.” Data modernization is a multi-step process that improves an organization's data infrastructure, tools, and practices. It involves moving data from legacy systems to modern technologies, often in the cloud, to make data more accessible. It involves adopting contemporary technologies and strategies to address outdated data management practices. For K-12 organizations, including local education agencies (LEAs), state education agencies (SEAs), and education service centers, data modernization is a critical journey that enables them to use the power of data to drive better decision-making and improve student outcomes.
