- Nathan Anderson Today my team at the Government Accountability Office released a Q&A report on mercury cleanup at the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that nuclear weapons production at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, resulted in the release of an estimated 700,000 pounds of mercury into the environment. The resulting contamination continues to pose the largest environmental risk at Oak Ridge, according to both DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency. Cleanup at the site will require deactivation and decommissioning of four large buildings, as well as soil and groundwater cleanup nearby, before it can be turned over for construction or expansion of other facilities at the Y-12 complex. This is estimated to take about 20 years and cost $3.2 billion, on top of previous site cleanup work, though DOE officials are currently updating these estimates. DOE tracks risks to its mercury cleanup program by individual project rather than the entire program, which could obscure risks affecting multiple projects. Delays or disruptions in one project may impact others in ways that project-level risk assessment cannot anticipate. We recommend that DOE improve risk management of mercury cleanup, including by managing risks at the program level. https://lnkd.in/etgk2pRJ
