- Nick Owsley “I worked alongside Michael at Smarter Travel. I've benefited from his support, advice, and industry knowledge at both Smarter Travel and other businesses I've been a part of over the 2+ decades I've known and worked with Michael. He was a key part of the culture and operations at Smarter Travel as it experienced meteoric growth. Since then, he has held many key strategic and leadership roles while continuing to be a trusted advisor. During his time at Smarter Travel, Michael set the tone for hard work, openness, and honesty. Though not officially COO, Michael helped lead operations while also filling the role of Chief People Officer. He knew how to relate to all members of the team, serving as a sounding board while also nurturing talent and steering the company through its rapid growth phases with grace and resilience. Michael was also able to manage complex challenges. He was instrumental in making the company stronger before he headed off to business school. While his departure was a significant loss for the company, the foundations he helped put in place were key to its long-term success. Michael has been a trusted advisor as I've continued in my roles in marketing, as well as digital media and publishing. His deep understanding of the digital media landscape, his vast network of key individuals in the industry, and his empathy for all of the challenges that I have faced have been invaluable. All along, I've observed Michael's genuine interest and tireless efforts in fostering growth and development in others. He takes a deep interest in those around him. He knows how to balance the personal and the professional -- all while also balancing tactical and strategic initiatives. He is a mentor and a leader, and he is an invaluable asset to any organization lucky enough to have him.”
- Marc Maltz “I have worked with Michael in several capacities, including as a coach, mentor, and advisor. Throughout my career in organizational development and leadership, I have valued the importance of not just skill, but character in driving meaningful progress. Michael embodies this balance. In my role working with the management team and board at Fatherly, I had the opportunity to observe Michael's leadership firsthand during challenging periods for the company. What stood out was his emotional intelligence, he led with a mix of transparency, respect, and genuine people skills. Michael's ability to connect with individuals across all levels of the organization was key to fostering a collaborative and positive work environment. His insight as a seasoned business leader, particularly in the context of startups where resources are limited, was invaluable. He understands the nuances of managing constraints while driving growth and maintaining team morale. His knack for attracting and retaining talent speaks to his capability as a natural coach and mentor. Beyond his professional competencies, Michael's personal integrity and commitment to ethical practices stand out. He leads by example, embodying the qualities of a leader who not only aims for success but does so with consideration for the well-being of his team and the broader organization. Michael's contributions are marked by a blend of strategic thinking, empathy, and a practical perspective. His impact extends beyond immediate business outcomes, fostering a culture of growth, learning, and respect.”
