The outcome of the U.S. elections is a stark reminder that #climateaction is a continuous struggle, that progress cannot be taken for granted. Things are not moving fast enough. A leading intelligence provider told me they have stopped modelling 1.5C as the assumptions are becoming too unrealistic. The sum of actions is just not putting us on the right track. Yet, there are some fascinating lightspeed transformation cases to take inspiration from. One is #MissionControl to decarbonise the #UK electricity system in a mere five years. I enjoyed the discussion about the bold UK plans with Chris Stark and Emma Pinchbeck FEI at the roundtable of Hitachi Energy, SSE plc and National Grid. Another case is #China’s impressive deployment of #renewables - they are on track to reach their 2030 renewable target six years early and they’re electrifying much faster than other parts of the world. The technological progress of China is bringing down the costs of the transformation for everybody. In a world with wars, ideological rivalry and agressive industrial competition, it also raises questions for Europe. On how to keep pace and balance concerns over #security and #competitiveness. Thank you to the Bulgarian Green Forum for an interesting big-picture discussion with Energy Minister of Moldova, Victor Parlicov, European Commission Director Cristina Lobillo and CEOs from NEK and PPC. And to ECCO think tank and Agora Energiewende for the deep-dive on the potential of industrial #electrification.#Electricity is the fuel of the future and renewables will be the key source of generation. But how to make them reliable and ensure that they co-exist with the natural surroundings? With The Nature Conservancy we hosted a discussion based on our #PowerPlant guidebook for sustainable deployment of renewables. Led by Malcolm Turnbull and Eddie Rich the International Hydropower Association (IHA) hosted a roundtable on accelerating the buildout of pumped storage hydro. As Romanian minister Sebastian Burduja highlighted, #skills are crucial - and scarce. The importance of electricity #grids was also buzzing across the many pavillions. Not least due to the pledge to ramp up investments championed by the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and the #COP29 Presidency. I hope to see a reference to anticipatory grid investments in the final text. The coming week will show whether countries can overcome the dividing lines. The challenges and complexity are humbling.
