๐ฑ Excited to announce our latest publication! Our review manuscript, "Exploring Camellia oleifera Abel seed cake as a sustainable source of protein for food applications," is now published! ๐ With the rising global demand for protein-rich foods, itโs critical to identify sustainable sources. Camellia oleifera seed cake, a by-product of Camellia oil extraction, offers immense potential due to its high protein content which can be used as a surface-active compound in foam- or emulsion-based food and non-food products. However, our review highlights key challenges in valorizing oilseed by-products, particularly the complexation of proteins with small molecules like saponins or polyphenols during seed processing, which significantly impacts protein extractability and functional properties. We emphasize the need for a comprehensive evaluation across the supply chain from Camellia oleifera farming and oil extraction processes to innovative protein recovery methodsโto unlock its full potential as a sustainable protein source. ๐ Read the full review https://lnkd.in/eYzVKuve #Sustainability #FoodScience #ProteinInnovation #CamelliaOleifera #FoodTechnology #Research

A study published in the Peer J Journal was conducted on 10 different farms from across the Midwest and the Eastern US and concluded that the crops grown on farms with regenerative farming practices had a healthier nutritional profile than those grown on conventional farms. On average, food grown with regenerative farming practices contained more magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins, B1, B12, C, E, and K. Regenerative organic agriculture is good for the planet, society, and health! Happy to share our Working Paper A Review of the Aggregation Models Used in the Commercialisation of Biofortified Crops Programme, coordinated from 2019-2022 by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and HarvestPlus, which sought to scale up the production and consumption of biofortified foods (wheat, maize, cassava, rice, pearl millet, and beans) through commercial pathways in six countries in Africa and Asia. Thanks to all the co-authors (Panam Parikh Nutrition for Impact, Valerie M. Friesen, Annette M. Nyangaresi, Bho Mudyahoto, Ishank Gorla, Mduduzi N. N. Mbuya, Nathaline Onek A., Hans De Steur) for the opportunity to propose actionable recommendations to efficiently commercialise biofortified crop #valuechains. By aligning the objectives and outcomes of the #CBCprogramme with the #SDGs, this working paper underscores the broader impact of #biofortification on #globalhealth, #economicdevelopment, and #sustainableagriculture.#GAIN #HarvestPlus #UGent #Nutritionforimpact https://lnkd.in/eWXJaTKe

"Plant-based alternatives will reduce our carbon footprint." But itโs not that simple. First, we often overlook the nutritional trade-offs when cutting out animal products. Real dairy is loaded with essential vitamins and minerals that many plant-based options just donโt have. (Think B12, Iron, and Calcium). Nut milks, for example, are mostly water and donโt offer the same nutritional value. While nut milks might be a great choice if you are looking to avoid dairy or have lower calorie count - it is not comparing apples to apples - or in this case cows' milk to nut milk. Second, when we talk about sustainability, we canโt forget about soil health. Cattle - think cow manure - can help improve soil health. So, what can we do about it as consumers? A lot, actually. Every time we shop, weโre making choices that influence the future of our food system. With a better understanding of agriculture and the nuance behind the products we love, we can help drive positive change in agriculture. Sustainability isnโt just about lowering carbon emissionsโitโs about making choices that benefit our health, our soil, and the entire ecosystem. P.S. In what ways do you think consumer choices can drive change in the agricultural industry?

We are constantly told that we should follow a plant-based diet. However, because most crops come from intensive farming, while agricultural yields are growing, the nutrient levels (vitamins, minerals etc) of dozens of popular vegetables have continued to fall. This is contributing to a phenomenon called "hidden hunger", where people feel sated but may not be healthy, as their food is calorie-rich but nutrient-poor. All this while we overconsume, obesity continues to rise (and so does the contribution of the food system to diabetes and heart diseases) and people complain about the cost of Ozempic. Either we move from intensive farming to a more sustainable agriculture, or we need to change the incentives systems: "we would need a food production system which monitors nutrition in food and pays farmers for effective nutrient yield, not just mass of produce".https://lnkd.in/d9G-67E8 #plantbaseddiet #healthylongevity #obesity #globalfoodcrisis #ozempic #humanleadership #sustainability

However, the high price of organic products restrain the marketโs growth. Organic fast foods serve as healthier alternatives to traditional fast-food products. These products use ingredients produced through organic farming practices, which promote ecological balance and biodiversity while minimizing the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, organic fast-food products are free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial colors, synthetic pesticides, and artificial preservatives. ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ 1. With rising interest in hybrid meat alternatives and plant-based proteins, the focus is on how we can utilize soy in a way that is both innovative and consumer-friendly. ๐ก Precision Fermentation & Minimal Processing: In the evolving field of precision fermentation, we can optimize amino acid balances to keep our diets healthy. But instead of overprocessing, can we achieve this with a low-tech, low-processed approach? Take natto, miso, and tempeh for exampleโthese are all fermented soy products, and neutralizing their taste could unlock broader consumer acceptance. Soy serves as the essential substrate for these fermentation processes, making it an ideal candidate for hybrid meat development while maintaining its health benefits. ๐ Consumer Perception Matters Highly processed foods, especially meat imitations, are often viewed as unhealthy by consumers. The challenge is clear: we need to create minimally processed, nutrient-rich options that cater to modern tastes without compromising on health or quality. This opens the door for soybean as an integral player in hybrid meats and plant-based alternatives, driving both sustainability and innovation. ๐ Northwest Europeโs Opportunity Northwest Europe, with its climate and agricultural expertise, is well-positioned to grow soybean as a premium crop. By leveraging its potential for hybrid meat production and plant-based alternatives, we could elevate soy beyond a commodity into a high-value crop that benefits farmers and consumers alike. ๐ Call to Action What do you thinkโcan soybean become the premium crop that leads the way in Northwest Europeโs protein transition? How do we balance innovation with minimal processing to meet consumer demands? Let's discuss how we can create a sustainable future for both agriculture and our diets. #PROTISEM #breeding #soybean #dietshift
