- Nicolai Tangen, the boss of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, worth around $1.8 trillion, is never far away from an eager investor keen for advice on how to beat the market. https://lnkd.in/dXqAN7apWhile it may not be advice he is necessarily following himself, Tangen’s latest tip is to diverge from the crowd. “The best thing to do is always to do the opposite of everybody else,” Tangen told Bloomberg in an interview at Davos. “What will that be today? Rita Ferro started her career as a manager of international sales at ESPN. https://lnkd.in/g772dy7NWhen Disney and ESPN’s advertising teams were being combined in 1998, her new boss asked for recommendations for a head of sales. She put forward her own team: “We have a sales team, right?” she told her manager. Speaking up worked out for Ferro, who two decades later is Disney’s president of global advertising. She oversees a multibillion-dollar advertising portfolio across linear TV and streaming at the entertainment giant with $89 billion in annual revenue, from ABC and ESPN to Disney Plus. President Trump announced an eye-popping investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure in the U.S., funded through a joint venture called the Stargate Project. https://lnkd.in/eZjbpKMpAccording to Trump, the investment is likely to spur an increase of 100,000 jobs and will be accompanied by a spate of executive orders to ensure new data centers built in connection with the investment will have enough energy. - The employee backlash over JPMorgan Chase’s 5-day-a-week return to work mandate is gaining momentum. https://lnkd.in/epVtT5RVSeveral workers have reached out to the Communications Workers of America about forming a union shortly after the country’s biggest bank increased its in-office policy from three to five days a week. According to Nick Weiner, an organizer with the CWA, about a dozen JPMorgan Chase employees, representing groups from different areas of the bank all over the U.S., have contacted the union. - Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said investment banks could use AI to cut down on rote tasks like writing financial documents. https://lnkd.in/eh2nxTD6Bankers used to have to spend weeks at a time drafting documents to be submitted for public filings. But at the Cisco AI Summit in Palo Alto on Wednesday, Solomon said that 95% of an S1 filing, which is the form a company files with the Securities and Exchange Commission when it goes public, can be completed by AI in just a few minutes. The efficiency gains are notable, considering it used to take a six-person team two weeks to complete the same task, Solomon said at the conference, according to the Financial Times. - Citigroup’s lavish renovation of its 42-story building in London’s Canary Wharf is expected to come with an eye-watering £1 billion price tag. https://lnkd.in/eq4pbiwCThe refurbishment was originally reported to cost around £100 million when it was launched in January 2022. A representative for Citigroup told Fortune that the figure had never been accurate and was never confirmed by the bank. - Walgreens has had years-long drama with a provider of the ad-bearing fridge doors in their stores—and they’re trying to get out of their contract. https://lnkd.in/emdyVWz9Doing so, however, could cost the company millions. Cooler Screens sued the pharmacy chain for $200 million in June 2023 for breach of contract, according to a case filing. While it’s not news that Cooler Screens sued Walgreens, and Walgreens subsequently countersued Cooler Screens for monetary damages, Bloomberg reported Thursday Cooler Screens CEO Arsen Avakian found his own means of retaliation.
